Hear! If I were to exclude writers who were jerks from my available list, there would be quite a few classics I would not be able to read. I don't read Franzen because I don't like his books not because he happens to also be a jerk (although, jerkiness may be exactly my beef with his writing - I've only read The Corrections, and my problem was that it seemed like he was disdainful of his own characters.) They are "serious" literature but Franzen isn't an author I feel connected to and, therefore, the necessity of needing an actual paper copy of his books didn't matter to me (compare this to Jasper Fforde and George RR Martin whose books I love SO much that I have multiple formats - audio and paper (someday electronic, too) for Fforde and ebook (for ease of handling) and audio for GRRM). So funny. I can't help but laugh a lot. That being said, there are things that an author would say that would make me avoid their books. If they were, for example, very vocally racist, homophobic, or otherwise discriminatory I would be hesitant to read their books because I would suspect their prejudices to show through. Or if I do read it, I would at least keep it in mind to see how their prejudices show through!
