Nice to hear this from an author, George. I can only imagine what his poor publicist has gone through this week.

Writers should be read not heard. Franzen popping off is a stupid first draft. An editor makes sure the dumb crap stays out sight. And in the case of "Freedom" not particularly successful all the time.

Franzen is a curmudgeon. Plain and simple.

I feel like telling him that I can't afford to buy his book in hardback for $28. So I buy it as an e-book for $9.99. Would he prefer that I not buy it at all?

I also notice that he is not too proud to capitalize on the growing trend of ereaders by offering his books in ebook format. All of his books, including essay and memoir, are available on Kindle.

Hear! Hear! If I were to exclude writers who were jerks from my available list, there would be quite a few classics I would not be able to read. I don't read Franzen because I don't like his books not because he happens to also be a jerk (although, jerkiness may be exactly my beef with his writing - I've only read The Corrections, and my problem was that it seemed like he was disdainful of his own characters.)

I'm sure JFranz is enjoying the royalties he earned off both THE CORRECTIONS and FREEDOM as I bought them both on my NOOK. They are "serious" literature but Franzen isn't an author I feel connected to and, therefore, the necessity of needing an actual paper copy of his books didn't matter to me (compare this to Jasper Fforde and George RR Martin whose books I love SO much that I have multiple formats - audio and paper (someday electronic, too) for Fforde and ebook (for ease of handling) and audio for GRRM).

The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

Yeah I just like knowing at least. I realized halfway through the comment that I've read works by authors like that, but once I know I just read more carefully ;)

I usually try to separate the person from the art--I mean, I've read some great books by some of history's great misogynists--but I agree that if damaging biases popped up in their work, I'd avoid the work in the future.

I've read and enjoyed all of his books so far, and as long as he continues to write stuff that works for me, I honestly couldn't care less what he does or says in his non-writing time.

Wow, what a crazy fool he is. So funny. I can't help but laugh a lot. That being said, there are things that an author would say that would make me avoid their books. If they were, for example, very vocally racist, homophobic, or otherwise discriminatory I would be hesitant to read their books because I would suspect their prejudices to show through. Or if I do read it, I would at least keep it in mind to see how their prejudices show through!

Other than that, meh, people being silly is just amusing but I'd really rather ignore usually. heh
