So, I Read FIFTY SHADES OF GREY
2012 at 5am Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
Yep. I did it. You can chalk this one right up there with Nicholas Sparks’ The Last Song and Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol on the list of Books I Read So You Don’t Have To.
I firmly believe that you have to earn your right to have an opinion about a book–kinda like how you don’t get to bitch about the state of things if you don’t vote–and frankly, my curiosity was getting the better of me. Figuring that anything that’s fun to do alone is more fun with a partner, I asked my pal Greg Zimmerman (who also writes for Book Riot and is the brains behind The New Dork Review of Books) to come along for the ride. And he said yes!
After a series of silly emails and Twitter DMs, we got down to business. Check out the first installment (of two, or maybe three, depending on how chatty we get) of our Fifty Shades of Grey reading diary now. And if you’ve read it too, I’d love to know what you think!

I’m glad you’re reading this – so I don’t have to. Your reading diary is quite humorous on this. But alas so many books, so little time, so I’ll pass on the “mommy porn” as the newspaper says they call it …

I’m reading it and live-blogging it. So far, I agree with everything you guys have said, but I’m only to the beginning of chapter 7. No sexy-sex yet.

I read it, one b/c my curiosity got the best of me too and two b/c it’s my book club book for June (I was already going to read it before then though). And I have to say, I don’t regret one minute of it. Was it over the top? Absolutely. I rolled my eyes more times than I can count. But despite all that, I’m waiting in line at the library for the next two b/c I do need to know what happens next for some strange reason.

A bit of a conundrum. My sister ( non reader ) is wanting to read a book. GASP. She asked me about “Fifty Shades…” I am torn as to what to tell her. Maybe for a recently divorced mother of 3 this is better than therapy???
I’m all for whatever gets non-readers reading. 50 Shades is quick and easy, and it might be fun for her. If she digs it, there’s always better written erotica or romance to recommend after that.
At the halfway mark of book 1, I can’t say I’ll be following through to the second and third installments, but I can totally understand doing it. And how on earth does this work as a book club book? I’m super curious about what that convo would look like.
I also read Fifty Shades out of curiosity. I did not like the first book at all but continued on to the next two (I’m currently half-way through the third one). I’d have to say the second and third ones have been a lot better. What other erotica books would recommend?
I just finished reading it yesterday and although it’s so repetitive and tedious to read, I found myself at the end wanting to know the rest of the story. I don’t, however, relish reading any more about Ana’s flushing/blushing or her biting her lip.
For some truly entertaining reading, check out the 1-star reviews on amazon.com. Some are hilarious. My favorite sums it all up perfectly: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2HHBQETYNMKCX/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B0052U59F4&nodeID=&tag=&linkCode=

We read this as an online book club book a couple of months before it hit the stratsophere, and I totally don’t get why it did. Months later and there are still constant posts about the books, partially because of the library that pulled it from the shelves, but also just ongoing discussion.
Having said that my non-reader sister asked me about it the other day which surprised me no end!

I like Anais Nin (old school) and James Salter’s “A Sport and a Pastime,” which isn’t straight-up erotica but is incredibly hot. I’ve also enjoyed some anthologies, including the “Aqua Erotica” series, in which the books are actually waterproof. Pretty awesome.
I recommend Butterfly by Kathryn Harvey–pretty steamy, but also a good story. I haven’t read it in a while, but just checked amazon and it has 5 stars–106 reviewers. I might just pick it up again this weekend now that it’s on my mind.

ahh….. your humor is quite relaxing. Not sure if i would read this though.
Oh thank you so much for the laugh!!! I hopped on over to Book Riot and read yours and Greg’s diary and I just had to laugh. My husband has been bugging me to read this book. He read it and told me how GREAT it was and I was all like… Me thinks not…. But on the outside I was like… Oh sure honey I’ll get right to it as soon as my TBR list has dwindled down…. So that is kinda like When Hell Freezes Over but he doesn’t know that. Haha!
I am torn as to whether or not to read the other two. I’ve heard that it gets better, but I was so sick of it by the time I got to the last page. If there weren’t more I would have breathed a sigh of relief that she finally got it, but alas the next two installments let me know that she still hasn’t figured things out. I know I will probably read them and perhaps hate myself a bit for reading them. I loved your reading diary though, much better than the book!

Rebecca, just read about your blog in garden and gun. Congrats! I would love for you to check out my funny blog on fifty shades. I think you will get a kick out of it! http://www.twitchypalmmoms.com thanks!
Every time I decide that I am ABSOLUTELY not going to read this book, I read something that makes me question my decision! Think I will skip the book and check out your diary instead!
I had heard a lot of things about these books, and was simply curious! Wow was I suprised! The story line is great, because who hasn’t tried at sometime in our life to fix a man?! Now all the kinky was a bit much, but I fell in love with the couple. I have enjoyed all three books, and feel like I know the characters personally! Great summer read!
