Celebrate Reading with FridayReads!
2010 at 5am Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
With the exception of my notoriously lazy Sundays, Friday is my favorite day of the week. My work is wrapping up, the weekend looms with the promise of rest, relaxation, and hours of reading, and Twitter explodes in a maelstrom of book recommendations and bookish conversation thanks to the phenomenon known as FridayReads (or #fridayreads, if we’re referring to the formal hashtag).
FridayReads was created by Bethanne Patrick (@thebookmaven), and it is beautiful in its simplicity: tell the world what you’re reading. Books, magazines, work papers, cereal boxes, inscrutable personalized license plates—it’s all good. And it’s all about celebrating and promoting literacy.
For a little over a year now, participants have shared their real-time reading selections on Twitter using the #fridayreads hashtag, and Miz Maven, as I call her, recently launched a FridayReads Facebook page so even if you don’t tweet, you can participant. And now the fun is going to continue because…
*drumroll*
The Book Lady’s Blog is now the official blog partner of FridayReads!
So if you aren’t on Twitter and you don’t use Facebook, but you want to participate in this weekly celebration of books and reading, you can do it here by leaving a comment telling me what you’re reading.
Here’s why you should do it:
1) FridayReads includes everyone: readers, authors, writers, librarians, booksellers, critics, bloggers, editors, publicists, salespeople, publishers. (See this piece in Shelf Awareness for more details.)
2) YOU CAN WIN STUFF (every week, randomly selected FridayReads participants receive a variety of books and bookish prizes, and this week, the prizes include a Kobo e-reader)
3) Because, as Bethanne says, “it bands us together in the shared joy of reading and encourages us all to read more.” And in a world where Justin Bieber is regularly a trending topic on Twitter, what’s not to love about that?
And now, a special offer for bloggers:
Invite your non-tweeting readers to join the FridayReads and share their FridayReads selection here at The Book Lady’s Blog, and you will be entered to win one of five book & tote-bag bundles from HarperPerennial, not to mention the satisfaction you’ll have in knowing you were part of helping FridayReads reach the monumental 5,000 participant mark! Drop your links in the linky to be entered.

OK I am just being lazy. You can’t blame me, I just got back from five days in Napa! Anyway, I am reading something quite wonderful…Affinity by Sarah Waters. I am allowing myself to only read her stuff once every 9 months or so, and the only thing I have left to read is Tipping the Velvet after this. She needs to get popping, and publish another book. Never mind that this is one of her older works, it is glorious. (Congrats on the partnership by the way!)

What a wonderful idea! (I put up a post on my old blog as opposed to the new one which has not really gotten underway yet. Hope that is OK.)

This is a very cool idea and I can see this leading to an even longer list of things that I need to read!
I just finished reading The Charlatan’s Boy by Jonathan Rogers and I really loved it. So I am trying to decide what’s next!
I’m currently reading Chasm City, by Alastair Reynolds. It falls into the genre of sci-fi space opera, quite specific. This has been an absolutely stunning read because of Reynolds’s ability to imagine the future 500 years from now, describing wondrous technologies and creatures, all with very human motivations. (It’s a story of revenge.) Ever thought of buildings that grow and twist like trees? Bioengineered animals? Viruses that inculcate religion into your head? It’s all in there, with a mercenary thug for a main character. Reynolds worked for the European Space Agency for 16 years, giving it an authentic feel. Admittedly, I am a little bit sick of rogue, Jason Bourne mercenaries but the spacescape that he paints makes it worthwhile.
My first #fridayreads is “Room” by Emma Donoghue. Love, love, love it!!!
Warmth of Other Suns (Isabel Wilkerson) — loving it, btw.
Mini Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella and this one has me laughing outloud. I’m a bit obsessed with Becky Bloomwood and the situations she finds herself in in this book don’t seem so far-fetched as other Kinsella books.

Have just started Mr. Rosenblum Dreams in English. Found it on a blog, sorry I can’t remember whose. It is about a German Jewish couple who emigrate to England at the beginning of WWII, and he wants to build his own golf club because no one will let him join the golf clubs in England.
I’m reading “Finding George Orwell in Burma” by Emma Larkin (a pseudonym). This is a beautiful book that combines Orwell, totalitarian governments, and a travelogue of Burma.
Consider yourself blogged! Rock on, #FridayReads!

China Mievelle’s Kraken — I don’t know how I feel about it yet, his concepts are absolutely amazing but sometimes the writing is a bit frustrating. Anybody else have this experience?
I seriously heart FridayReads, both on Twitter and Facebook. Nice to see you’re partnering with Bethanne.
As for my “Friday Reads” (even though it’s now Monday), I’m loving and laughing with Brock Clarke’s AN ARSONIST’S GUIDE TO WRITERS’ HOMES IN NEW ENGLAND.
