The Sunday Salon 7.25.10
2010 at 9am Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
I know, I know. You think you know what I’m about to say here.
Sunday, couch, pajamas, yada yada yada. Lather, rinse, repeat.
And to that I say: NO! I’m coming to you this week from Wilmington, Delaware. Which means that I am happy to report that yes, Delaware does exist. (I wasn’t so sure about it for a while there.)
Bob and I drove up Friday afternoon to spend some time hanging out with friends, visiting new places—including Ninth Street Book Shop (which doesn’t have a website, FOR SHAME!)—and spending some time outside while Bob competes in a regatta with the masters team of the Virginia Boat Club. I’m hoping to find a tree to lounge beneath and sneak in some time with Mr. Peanut in between races, as Bob informs me that regattas are a little action and a whole lotta waiting.
The week began with a guest post about turning books into works of art (and yes, I did get one of these beauties), then I reviewed Mattaponi Queen, a collection of short stories that are themselves works of art. I gave you a little teaser from The Typist, which is likely to make it into my best-of-the-year list. To round out the week on a fun note, I surveyed my tweeps about the best cures for writer’s block, and the resulting suggestions were all over the board (and a lot of fun), then author Belle Boggs shared an annotated reading list of the staples of her reading life.
I’m loving Mr. Peanut so far, and Bob and I began listening to Shutter Island on audio on the drive up, so it’s a weekend of good books, and I’m just pleased as punch.
Some links worth checking out:
- Slush Pile Hell, one rogue agent’s hilarious take on reading REALLY BAD queries.
- For the other side of the story, see iterary agent Nathan Bransford’s praise of reading slush.

And now a moment of fun.

Happy Sunday!

I can understand your suspicions about Delaware’s existence! However I can speak from experience because I have lived in the area for over 25 years now. Although I currently live in Pennsylvania, I still work in Wilmington. I assume you are somewhere near the Wilmington waterfront, and that you’ll be heading home later today? You may not have much time to see the sights, such as they are, but allow me to recommend a couple of things that may be close by:
1) For the tree to lounge beneath, try Rockford Park.
2) There’s a funky cinema called Theatre N, located in an old office building at 11th and Tatnall. “The Girl who Played with Fire” is on at 2pm. We saw “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” there yesterday and it sold out so you may need to check availability … but it’s not a bad way to spend a blistering hot afternoon ! Maybe you can sneak off while Bob is regatta-ing ?!
3) If you’re hungry for great burgers and milkshakes, go to The Charcoal Pit on Rt. 202. Any local should be able to give you directions. Just north of there you’ll find a Borders and B&N … unfortunately I can’t think of too many indie shops in the area.
And I’m with you about Ninth Street Books — they’ve been around for years and I can’t understand why they haven’t entered the 21st century!
Enjoy your day!

Mr. Peanut? Hmmm, haven’t heard of it. As usual, I haven’t heard, though, of half (okay, three quarters) of the books you mentioned, but as usual, they are books I wish I had…and am glad you’re letting us know about them, plus all the great link. Thanks, as always, for sharing.
When I think of Delaware, I always think of two scenes: one from The Simpsons, where Lisa says about Wilmington: “I want to visit the screen door factory” and the other from Wayne’s World where they’re in front of a blue screen when they’re doing a commercial and Delaware pops up, it’s blank and they can’t think of anything to say.

Oh gosh, Sandy just raved about Shutter Island on audio….I went out and bought the book version, although you know what I’m gonna say next: there it sits on the shelf unread as of yet.
I love car drives with an audio book. Long car drives. I never get to do that anymore. I’m thinking of just taking off, leaving kidlets and Mr RR behind and driving to….well, I don’t know….maybe Nebraska. Just to listen to audio books. That would be cool.
Okay, I’m rambling, but you started it. Delaware would be cool. It’s the only state I’ve never been to. (Coincidentally, it’s the only state that I’ve never landed an airplane in, but that could be because the only runway they have in the entire state is an airforce base and I hear Dover frowns on landing commerical airliners there….party poopers). So next time I have a long layover in DC, I’m seriously going to rent a car and go have lunch in Delaware. Where’s a good spot?
