I'm surprised how few of these books I've read or heard of! Some of the authors ring a book, but this is like a list of books that I've totally overlooked. Silly me. I found this to be such a great guest post, especially since I'm really considering jumping into the teaching profession. Its so inspiring to hear about the different ways that teachers connect with their students.

What a great idea for a post! I love the shout-out to The Moth. I don't listen to it regularly, but the couple of stories I've heard from it just really stick in my mind. Most recently, I heard a fantastic story about a man who survived a vicious stabbing and the story ends with what he said to his primary attacker in court, which I don't want to say what it was, but it was just incredible.

I am so excited to find these books & begin devouring them. I taught high school English for three years, then have been in the social work field for approximately three, but in a couple of weeks I'm returning to the classroom full-time, for an entirely new experience with 7th and 8th graders. As I'm teaching grammar and writing, this list will come in handy! Thanks for sharing -- and I can't wait to read Mattiponi Queen.

Truly a fabulous post. I have enjoyed many of these books, and I see some ideas I can use in my own teaching. Thanks for this, Belle and Rebecca!

I taught at the university level and in the sciences, so I have not had the opportunity to bring books to students. I like the list you've given here, and there are a couple I need to track down.

I have not had experience with teaching books in classrooms, but a few I have read that I thought would make good discussion are: Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie. He explores history, gender roles, and cultural assumptions in the style of magic realism. I think that there would be a lot to discuss. The other book I think would be interesting to read and discuss as part of a class is Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver which is about missionaries in Congo. I love how the book interweaves personal stories with question about religion and gives insight and a different perspective on cultural imperialism. Anyway, I really enjoyed your post and thank that your students are lucky to have you!
