2010 at 7am Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
Join Fountain Bookstore and me as we discuss China Mieville’s The City and The City during our next #fountainreads Twitter-based book discussion, Wednesday, June 22nd at 7pm Eastern.
Full details can be found here, but I’ll give you the quick and dirty.
This is what the book is about:
When a murdered woman is found in the city of Beszel, somewhere at the edge of Europe, it looks to be a routine case for Inspector Tyador Borlú of the Extreme Crime Squad. To investigate, Borlú must travel from the decaying Beszel to its equal, rival, and intimate neighbor, the vibrant city of Ul Qoma. But this is a border crossing like no other, a journey as psychic as it is physical, a seeing of the unseen. With Ul Qoman detective Qussim Dhatt, Borlú is enmeshed in a sordid underworld of nationalists intent on destroying their neighboring city, and unificationists who dream of dissolving the two into one. As the detectives uncover the dead woman’s secrets, they begin to suspect a truth that could cost them more than their lives. What stands against them are murderous powers in Beszel and in Ul Qoma: and, most terrifying of all, that which lies between these two cities.
And this is how you participate:
- Create a Twitter account if you don’t already have one.
- Go to www.tweetchat.com, sign in with your Twitter username and password
- Enter fountainreads into the hashtag search box
It’s that easy! Just jump into the convo and meet other readers. Kelly Justice (@RVAbookchik) will moderate the discussion, and I’ll be there playing along. Or, you know, if it’s a beautiful day and no one feels like tweeting, I’ll just tweet-sing Neil Diamond lyrics again. Because that was fun.
If you’re still not sold on this book, check out this video in which Jenn Northington (another AMAZING indie bookseller) gushes about The City and the City.

I have been meaning to read something by this author and the book description sounds awesome! My intentions are definitely to join in but I usually have a hard time joining in discussions–I just forget or have other stuff I have to do!
Ooohhh I have that book! I might have to try to read it before then. Thanks for the early notice.

Well, there’s a nice co-inky-dink. I’m just in the middle of this book myself. Work permitting, I’ll be there!
Mieville’s the author I recommended to Janet, who wanted to try out something from the fantasy genre that wasn’t full of clichéd elves and wizards. It seemed to do the trick: she enjoyed it and pops in every now and then for further recommendations.
I read and reviewed The City & The City for our library blog. I liked it, but other reviews were mixed. Some reviewers didn’t like it as much as China Mieville’s other books (which I haven’t read yet). Recently I saw, though, that the author won the Arthur C. Clarke award (for the third time) for The City & The City, so I guess those judges liked it.

Don’t know if I’ll be able to participate since I have a lot to do before traveling tomorrow, but I’m going to try!
