Twitter made me do it! (#pantyworthy photos revealed!)
2010 at 9am Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
(Nothing like April Fools Day for revealing photos inspired by a Twitter-based dare, right?)
I love Twitter for many reasons. I’m a verbal processor, so the thinking-out-loud things that happen on Twitter are right up my alley, and the beauty of it is that most of what you say is forgotten in fifteen minutes anyway.
Until a joke about throwing my panties at an author ends up getting its own hashtag and becoming A THING.
I don’t think I’ll ever forget that, and I certainly won’t forget the night that several Twitter friends essentially dared me to take photos to go along with the pantyworthy concept and then joined me in unleashing a veritable Twitter smoke monster on my friend PJ Sykes—who happens to be a super fabulous photographer—until he agreed to take them.
Enter Deanna Danger, an equally fabulous stylist, and my good friends at Fountain Bookstore, and the deal was done.
So, without further ado, a few of the photos from what was one of the most fun evenings I’ve had in a while.

Bet you’ll never think I won’t make good on a dare again, huh?
HUGE HUGE thanks to photographer PJ Sykes and stylist Deanna Danger for, well, making me look good and to Kelly and the gang at Fountain Bookstore (especially Steve, who resisted MOST of the inappropriate jokes that evening) for being cool enough to let me do this. Also, thanks to the customer who totally acted like nothing was unusual when he had to step over me while I lay on the floor for a few of the shots. I’d also be remiss not to thank PJ’s fiancee Melissa, who coached me along with America’s Next Top Model-inspired advice like “Smize, Rebecca! Come on.” You know I love you, girl.
I’ll be using some of these in my upcoming blog redesign….which ones do you like best?

The third shot is my favorite and the second shot is next. But they are all fabulous. What a hoot and I’m so glad the entire awesome team came together to make this happen. Can’t wait to see the new blog.
A customer had to step over you while you were on the floor?! How funny! You already know I think you look gorgeous in the pictures. I think my favorite picture of you is the one of the floor, surrounded by books. Now that you actually took this dare, people need to think of more dares for you! LOL!
Let it never be said that I don’t have guts! And thanks—I love these and am so glad they turned out well.
Thanks, C! And you know that you were a major part of making this happen. You can tweet with the best of ‘em.
Wait, I don’t recognize you without a book in front of your face!!
Just kidding.
I love all of these, but I’d have to say my favorite is the one of you on the floor surrounded by books! I cannot wait to see them in the new blog design.
I like the 3rd one too! Which one is Bob framing for his office?
Ooh, now there’s a good idea for a birthday gift.
That’s my favorite, too!
It’s so funny to me that, since we haven’t met, I really only know you with a book in front of your face! That being said, I think my favorite is the one of you on the floor and my second favorite is #5 with you on the cart. The thought of a customer having to step over you is hilarious. And really, they’re all great pictures.
It is funny, Sue, especially because I feel like we know each other pretty well! With the new blog design will come a new avatar, likely one of these photos, so I’ll be out from behind the book for good.
Oh goodness I can’t even pick a favorite. I love these picture. I love the concept. I love that you did this! You are totally my new hero and who I will direct everyone to when they tell me reading is not cool
I think if I HAD to pick I would say the one with you pushing the cart. The look on your face is excellent!
Let it never be said again that sexy people don’t read!
Cute, but a few of the pics kinda cheapens you.
Stick to the blogging it looks like you are trying waaay too hard.
This is all in the spirit of good fun and making good on a silly dare. I hope my readers get my personality enough to know that. Also: there’s like 6 inches of skin here. Anyone who wears a swimsuit shows much more than that.
Wow – that stying is HOT! The haters are just envious
HOT! Reading is totally sexy!
I love the second photo the most — so fun. Love your expression and the pink rose. Third photo, pushing the cart, is really great, too!
This is the INTERNET Rebecca – it is serious business and you cannot have fun. You are a book reader and a blogger, that clearly means you have no sense of humor and probably cannot even interact normally with people.
You already know I think these are awesome, but I LOVE the one of you on the floor surrounded in books!
Gorgeous! Love the one on the floor, it just looks like such a fun and happy moment!
Ah this is funny, shows people can have all sorts of fun with books. I love the one of you on the floor surrounded by books. Sheer joy springs to mind.
Brought a smile to my face this afternoon.
Going to email you in a bit, need your help with something.
WOW! Congratulations on awesome photos! I vote the 2nd photo from the bottom for your blog redesign – you’re gorgeous! And it looks like you had so much fun.
LOVE these!! I agree with the others – the 3rd one is best, followed closely by the second.
such fun!!
Speaking of showing more skin in a bikini, I think this calls for a beach/swimsuit photo shoot for Dare #2! I see a “BookLady’s Beach Reads 2010″ spread in Sports Illustrated.
Thank you!
I love the consensus regarding the one lying on the floor. That’s one of the best pictures of me ever.
Thanks for putting me in my place, Kevin. For a minute there, I totally thought I was actually a fun person!
Now there’s a great idea….but I will DEFINITELY have to hit the gym first.
It was totally a moment of sheer joy! Glad you get it. Send that email on. I’ll be happy to help w/ whatever.
Hysterical! I love the one on the floor, the third one and the one you forgot that you posted on twitter!
You’re gorgeous here! And I LOVE that there is a poster that says “Dirty Books Sale.” way to pay attention to the details
I’m just going to add to the consensus and say you lying on the floor, followed by you pushing the book cart. You rock, Rebecca!
I know! The Dirty Book Sale is where Fountain discounts their damaged books. But you just can’t plan that kind of perfect detail, can you?
I think these pictures are great. My favorites are the ones of you pushing the cart, and on the floor.
These pictures could set off a whole new “READ” campaign!
Gosh, I liked the last one – I thought it best suited the “pantyworthy” moniker… I DO think that the one with the books on the floor is a fabulous shot though.
Yours,
Megan
I like the second and the fourth, but they are all spectacular! What fun!
You are a braver person that I! The one on the floor is definitely my favorite. I love your smile in that one.
You really need to come out of your shell. You’re too shy.
I think you should consider my marketing scheme. Mud flaps would encourage literacy and possibly reduce road rage.
I love the picture of you on the floor and the one in which you push the cart. Great pictures!
Joining the chorus of fans in saying that you look lovely. My favorite is the second one because of the joy and delight you express with being surrounded by books.
Wowza! My favorites are the last two.
Also, the comment above by JCD made me laugh out loud. Sheesh…
What most of you don’t realize is that this is how Rebecca actually dressed for work.
Well, aren’t you quite the looker! These are amazing! Who said reading isn’t sexy… sheesh. My fave the one where you’re rolling around in books on the floor. The third one… with the come hither look should totally be framed and given to your significant other… Very sexy, fun and definitely what I envision a young book afficionado/blogger to act like. Duh, I do it all the time
I can’t wait to see what the new layout looks like with the pics.
♥Nely
Great pictures!!! Go you
I think the shot I like the best is where you’re pushing the “dirty books” cart – it’s got great come-hither appeal
However, the laying on the floor one is great for the sheer joy of reading (and Bob should have a framed copy of the “oopsie” one since your pretty wedding ring is in that pic
)
Picture #2 is definitely my favourite! All of them are so much fun – I can’t wait to see how these work in to your new blog design.
I like the one where you are on the floor with the books. Um, better you than me…that’s for sure!
Too much fun, these pics are great. You look like you’re having a blast too, which is the best part. I’d vote for the second pic too.
love you surrounded by books and pushing the book cart!
You are far braver – and much more photogenic – than I am! (But my husband’s a very good photographer, and you’ve got me thinking that maybe I should enlist him for a bookish photo session…) Looks like you had a great time, and you’re definitely working the “Reading is Sexy” vibe!
I like the 3rd photo best (pushing the book cart – the “Dirty Books Sale” sign is perfect!), and the 2nd photo (lying on the floor) next after that.
Girl, you are gorgeous!! These pics are awesome. My personal favorite is the one with you surrounded by books…even though it’s not the hottest it definitely represents you as the book lady!
You’re gorgeous! My favorite is the second one. You look so joyful. Perfect for lying on the floor surrounded by books!
Can you imagine the sales that would bring in?
Why thank you! It turns out that one on the floor is the hands-down favorite.
Bob has been joking that I’m now the un-lady!
Let it never be said that I’m not gutsy! And you should totally have Tall Paul take bookish photos. I’d love to get a ton of people to do them for a Reading IS Sexy campaign.
Thanks!
For reals! I bet he has a conniption going to the beach. Just think of all the women cheapening themselves by wearing bathing suits!
I’m telling you, Chris, the mud flaps are a million dollar idea!
I really like that one, too!
That would be awesome!
Keep smizing! Don’t forget to model H-to-T!
I think it only could have been more fun if there was champagne. Because I like to drink when I’m coaching.
I LOVE the first one. I like the ones with you laughing, because, as I told PJ, that’s just who you are to me!
Be looking for my non-sexy version of #3 on facebook later. hahhaha.
When PJ was talking about just catching people doing what they do and capturing it in photos, it totally makes sense that I’m laughing in most of these, you know? And I cannot wait for your version! You guys are 2 of my most favorite people.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE (and if that isn’t clear, LOVE) the one with you on the floor with all those books. You just look so deliriously happy! Giddy.
You are a brave lady!!
#3 and the last one are my favorites!
Wow! You really did it up. I will have be careful in what I dare you do in NYC!
They are all lovely, the 2nd and 3rd are my favorites. I would try to replicate this at my local bookstore, but I do not have enough money to buy books AND make bail.
Hah! Yes, having the bookstore’s enthusiastic approval was a key step in the process
Gorgeous pics! Love it!
Maybe for the next Reading is Sexy campaign, you can wear your reading glasses for some of the shots — ya know, get that sexy librarian thing going on.
Yes. And then we can also prove that boys DO make passes at girls who wear glasses.
Indeed they do! Ooh, with that in mind, maybe we could add some hunky library patron to the photos. Could be fun! Wait — are we still talking about the Reading is Sexy campaign, or are we writing a porn movie??
I love the pic with the cart best. It’s great to see someone really enjoy what they do (your blog) and to have fun with it.
Thank you, Laura! I’m glad that comes through. I have an absolute blast with this and find that the more I let my personality and craziness out, the better it gets!
Love the pictures! So fun! Go you for doing the dare! My favorite is the second one where you are surrounded by books. I think it’s so funny people had to walk over you!!!
I was wondering if the store was open when you did this, I would have paid to see that customers face when he saw you in there. Those pics are great, I like to one with the “Dirty Books Sale” sign and the pouty face. I don’t know how you had the guts to pose for all those pics (because I couldn’t) but they are great!
What can I say? I’m a nervy girl!
You GO girl!!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!
Awesome! My favorite is #2 also. And I think Chris is on to something with that mudflap idea!
Reading IS sexy! Great photos. I don’t think I could ever be that brave.
–Anna
Awesomesauce!
You know what? This should be a meme.
I imagine the erotica section would see a “spike” for sure!
I commented to you on Twitter about this but I love the one on the floor lying amongst the books. It’s such a great candid! The pushing the cart shot is excellent as well. I mean they are all awesome but those two are my favs
HAHAHA!!!!!!!! I just arrived home from my NC author tour tonight, and when I opened up your email and clicked on this link, I about spit a mouthful of ice water onto my monitor!
Rebecca, I totally love these! The “Dirty Books Sale” cart is my absolutely favorite. You are a riot! (a very pretty riot!)
I think it might somehow become one, either by finding a way to convince other people to list their pantyworthy authors, or creating a seasonal series like this. Glad you like!
This looks like so much fun! Thanks for making books sexy! You have to use the last one!

a little late, but since i was there, i feel the need to say that rebecca and crew were having a blast- the only thing they were “trying waaay too hard” to do was not crack up long enough to get a shot. a fun evening for all, even if i had a tough time getting my work done.
Thanks, Steve! For being such a good sport AND for keeping an eye on the creepy guy wandering the aisles (also, thanks for not telling me about him until later).
