The Sunday Salon 3.14.10

This is one of my least favorite days of the year. I detest “spring forward” as fervently as I love Fall Back Weekend, and I want my hour of sleep back, damn it! It will take me at least a week to adjust to the time change, and even though I love having extra daylight through the summer months, it does not feel worth it right now.

But there’s nothing I can do about that, so I’ll just have to move on.

If last week was the week that Twitter went purple, this was the week it went menstrual. I reviewed Elissa Stein & Susan Kim’s fantastic book Flow: The Cultural Story of Menstruation, and the conversations that have followed have been nothing short of fascinating. I’m giving away three copies of the book, and the entries so far are funny, insightful, touching, and empowering. We’ve been talking about “oversharing” on Twitter, but I’m beginning to think we need to re-frame the conversation and emphasize that we shouldn’t think of  frank discussions about a natural process as oversharing. For the most part, the conversations I’ve seen and participated in have been mature, respectful, and informative, even when we’ve disagreed with each other. And there is something to be said for a book that gets people talking this way.

It’s been a busy week, and my brain is fried after a fantastic educator roundtable on books and media at my partner indie Fountain Bookstore yesterday. Wonderful ideas were shared, new ideas were born, and I came away with even greater respect and admiration for the people who dedicate their lives to inspiring young people to love the written word. I am very lucky to call many of them my friends, and I’ll need more time to wrap my head around everything we discussed yesterday before I can recap it here without gushing.

I finished Flawless: Inside the Largest Diamond Heist in History last night and look forward to reviewing it this week. I’ll be spending my extra lazy Sunday with one of my all-time favorites, Mary Doria Russell’s The Sparrow, which I’ll be reading for the fourth (or fifth?) time for the readalong I’m co-hosting with Florinda and Heather.

So, that’s my Sunday. I’m off to whip up a late breakfast and try to convince myself not to get back in bed. What are you up to today?
