The Sunday Salon 3.7.10
2010 at 2pm Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
(I almost titled this post “The week that Twitter went purple.”)
This’ll be a short one. It’s Sunday. The sun is shining. It’s finally warm enough to sit out on the back porch soaking up the rays and enjoying my current read, Flow: The Cultural Story of Menstruation by Elissa Stein and Susan Kim, and giving the neighbors that last bit of evidence that I really am as crazy as they thought. The lady spending her Sunday sitting on her patio in her pajamas and reading about periods MUST be crazy, right?
Fun at the blog this week included a recap of my day of booknerdery with Swapna of S. Krishna’s Books, a review of Gina Welch’s superfantastic exploration of evangelical culture In the Land of Believers, and a wrap-up of my February reading.
I also announced an educator roundtable on the intersection of books and media that I am thrilled to be hosting with Fountain Bookstore and Bethanne Patrick of The Book Studio.
But the highlight of my week had to be when my pals from Twitter Sue (@suejustbooks) and Margie (@justbooks) The Bookstore in Glen Ellyn, IL posted about the blogger recommendation bookmarks they created for Jen of Devourer of Books and me. And mine are for “panty worthy” recommendations! Just one more step toward my goal of making #pantyworthy a trending topic on Twitter! The bookmarks are awesome, and I’m so excited to visit them at The Bookstore on my next trip to Chicago. Thanks Sue & Margie!
Today finds me happy to have my hubby back after he spent eight days out of town on business. I tend to enjoy the peace and quiet and uninterrupted reading time when he’s gone, but I find that I stay up much later than I normally would, and I sleep horribly without him (though it goes against every last one of my feminist sensibilities to admit that), and a bad sleep schedule does not a happy Book Lady make.
In true Bob style, his return home was not only happy but highly entertaining. You see, my dear, sweet husband gets on these little kicks—mini-obsessions, if you will. Sometimes it’s a new video game. Sometimes it’s fiddling with projects around the house (can’t say I mind that one). Now it’s “being the best Bob he can be.” (To his credit, Bob says this with tongue planted firmly in cheek.) This involves getting back into a gym routine (always a good thing) and taking vitamins and supplements to help speed the process along. He told me he’d been doing internet research (internet research is one of his most favorite things to do) and had ordered a few things that should arrive at the house while he was out of town.
So I thought nothing of it when several boxes showed up on the doorstep last week. I figured they contained bottles of vitamins and such. Imagine my surprise when, upon his return home Friday night, Bob took this out of one of the boxes:
That’s right folks. That’s a five pound bottle of whey protein. Five pounds! And it’s bigger than my head! And how can there NOT be MORE than five pounds in that gargantuan thing?
So, the good: I got my husband back. The bad: it might not be too long before he’s wandering the neighborhood going “Bob stomp!” all Incredible Hulk-style. He’s been practicing, and it’s not pretty.
Coming up this week: reviews of Temple Grandin’s Thinking in Pictures and Sarah Blake’s The Postmistress…and who knows what else!
What are you doing today?
No related posts.

Hmmmm…five pounds, eh? And how exactly will you be consuming this? Do you sprinkle it on cereal? Mix it with fruit? Add it to a bread recipe?
Hubby’s adding it to smoothie-esque drinks made with creatine and god knows what else. We decided to take the pic w/ me because my head is smaller, so the jar looks even bigger, but I’ll be having no part of the consumption.
Whoa! Five pounds! I suspect not even Little Miss Muffett could eat that much whey.
Great post.
Holy crap. That’s a lot of whey protein. A lot.
Congratulations on the bookmark. I saw their blog and was so excited to see both you and Jen highlighted so prominently. You deserve it!
That container is huge! Let’s hope he enjoys the taste
He must have gotten a good deal on that TUB of whey. He should take some before and after pics. You know, to share with his “fans.”
Ti, you may have just hit on pure comic gold….now to convince Bob that we should document project Be the Best Bob on my blog…
Oh believe me, the Little Miss Muffet jokes were abundant.
Ha, ha. My husband has bought the exact same huge jug of whey protein. He takes it in milk shakes, after workouts. Says it’s great stuff! It lasts forever- he’s just reordered and we had the first jug for months. It was worth the money.
I can’t wait to see what you have to say about Thinking In Pictures. It’s the first Temple Grandin book I read, and one of my favorites.
Thanks for making me feel like this is slightly less weird. I think Bob is drinking these a couple times a day right now….but I’m interested to see how long it lasts. Glad to know it apparently has good results!
What am I doing today? Well, I’m not lounging around reading about menstruation .. that’ s for sure!! That book title just cracked me up. I’m sure you will eventually make me want to read it though.
And my husband gets on kicks too … but they never involved giant cans of whey! YIKES!
I fully intend to make you want to read FLOW. It’s fantastic. And I’m SO glad my hubby isn’t the only one. I keep trying to resist the urge to look at that tub and go “Duuuuude, no whey!”
I saw Jenn’s post and then went to the bookstore’s site and I love the bookmarks!
Where are the curds?
I’ve been offering to get him a custom-made tuffett, but he’s not amused.
OMG that bottle is crazy big! Glad Bob’s home.
Ha! When I saw the bottle of whey before reading your commentary, I literally thought, “Wow! It’s bigger than her head!” Looks like you’ll definitely have some Hulk-esque happenings at your house, but that could be awesome
Oh, the whey protein. My husband has used that from time to time. It takes up a crapload of space in the cupboard.
He also bought 2 big (but not this big) jars of other stuff. I made him transfer them into tupperwear canisters and hide the ginormous tubs in the laundry room.
I have a remarkably similar 5 pound thing of whey in my possession. Takes surprisingly long to ingest that much protein. Gotta love Sunday blogging!
Wow! that is a huge jar. I probably could get muscles from lifting that jar up and down.
I look forward to what you think of Temple Grandin’s book. I read her “Animals in Translation” book and found it fascinating.
It may be the highlight of MY week to know that the bookmarks were the highlight of YOUR week! It was a busy week at the Bookstore, with panty worthy bookmarks, devourerofbooks bookmarks, and the Bookstore Babe tiaras(of which we have saved one for you, of course!) We are so excited for you to visit the Bookstore and claim your bookmarks and tiara.
My god–that is bigger than your head! I hope Bob likes it!
