Kathleen Grissom at Fountain Bookstore: Win a signed copy of THE KITCHEN HOUSE
2010 at 7pm Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
The Deets
Kathleen Grissom will read and sign The Kitchen House, now out in paperback from Simon & Schuster, next Tuesday, February 23rd, at 6:30pm at my partner indie Fountain Bookstore (located at 1312 E. Cary St. in Richmond’s historic Shockoe Slip), and I’m thrilled to be introducing her!
So what’s the book about? The publisher describe it thusly:
When a white servant girl violates the order of plantation society, she unleashes a tragedy that exposes the worst and best in the people she has come to call her family.
Orphaned while onboard ship from Ireland, seven-year-old Lavinia arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the kitchen house. Under the care of Belle, the master’s illegitimate daughter, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded to her adopted family, though she is set apart from them by her white skin.
Eventually, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house, where the master is absent and the mistress battles opium addiction. Lavinia finds herself perilously straddling two very different worlds. When she is forced to make a choice, loyalties are brought into question, dangerous truths are laid bare, and lives are put at risk.
The Kitchen House is a tragic story of page-turning suspense, exploring the meaning of family, where love and loyalty prevail.
If that’s not enough to convince you, check out this rave review from Jennifer at The Literate Housewife, whose taste I trust implicitly, and this sneak peek at what you’ll be able to enjoy if you join us.
Plus, I’ll be there, and I want to meet you!

I’ve always enjoyed books about the old South. I loved reading Gone With the Wind and I know I would enjoy this one, too!
This book has got rave reviews all over the blogosphere. I dont know whether I am too late but if I am not count me in please
My dad was an American history teacher. When I was growing up, our family vacations were centered on visiting historical places all over the country but especially anything related to the Civil War. So I’ve kind of grown up with an interest in the whole idea of slavery.
