The Sunday Salon 1.17.09
2010 at 3pm Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
Today has the makings of a perfect Sunday. I slept until 11:15, was greeted by a basset hound bringing morning kisses, made a delicious cafe mocha on the home espresso machine, and have snuggled myself right into my perfect rut on the couch. I have a gently falling rain outside, a hound dog curled up on my lap, and my hubby snuggled next to me. There’s football on TV, leftovers in the fridge, and a great book just waiting t be finished.
What more could a girl ask for, especially after such a busy week?
I kicked off the excitement this week with my interview on That’s How I Blog! I had a lot of fun with Nicole, who didn’t reveal nearly all of the embarrassing bits I’m sure she found digging through my archives, and we wrapped it all up with a 20 Minute (that was actually more like 45) Book Club discussion of The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. If you missed the show, you can listen to it in the archives, and chime in to share your thoughts on The Little Stranger at my discussion post.
This week, I reviewed David Sedaris: Live for Your Listening Pleasure, and I FINALLY finished The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova. I’ll have a review coming this week, but suffice it to say the book was good but REALLY FREAKING LONG. And you know I’m not intimidated by big books….but this one was much longer than it needed to be, and I don’t tolerate that very well. But my desire to procrastinate reading it did give me time to reflect on a few of the things I can’t live without, and I’m having a good time reading your responses as well.
I’m now about 1/3 of the way through Joshua Ferris’s The Unnamed, which will be released on Tuesday, and given that I’m completely in love with it (I actually told my hubby—and Trish on Twitter—that I have lady-wood for Mr. Ferris now), I don’t think I should have any problem finishing it today.
Life-wise, I feel like I have, at long last, recovered from the holidays, and that is a very good thing. I’m back into the swing of things at work, I have a good workout routine going, and my calendar for the next several months is shaping up nicely. Major points of anticipation include seeing Robert Goolrick (author of A Reliable Wife) at Fountain Bookstore here in Richmond on February 11th; welcoming a good friend for a week-long visit Feb. 9th-13; my little sister’s wedding April 30th (I’ve been freaking out about writing my toast for months already, and it’s only going to get worse); and Book Expo America, for which I am now officially registered (yay!), May 25th-27th in New York City.
What are you up to this Sunday? And what are you looking forward to this spring?

Having a very similar Sunday here – rain, football, books, couch – and I am in my glory.
Sounds like you have a great couple of weeks coming up!
No PJ’s on the couch for me unfortunately. Church, flag football game and the grocery store for me. However, the kids and I are going to Universal tomorrow, preparing to get there at opening and pick one of the most awesome roller-coasters, sprint to the line, and get in the front seat. Unfortunately, it will probably be crammed with people by lunchtime, but that is the beauty of living here…we can just go home.
So, are you saying you are willing to throw your panties at Ferris? Is he that good? I’m just asking.
Sounds like a perfect Sunday to me, too! We didn’t have the rain in St. Louis, but our house certainly had the football, books and couch elements covered.
As you’re loving The Unnamed, I would strongly encourage you to read Ferris’ first novel, And Then We Came to the End. Hilarious and hearbreaking at the same time. I’ve never read a book told in the first-person-plural voice before, and I think it really added something to the narrative.
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!
Do you know how freaking’ jealous I am of you? Really, a lot. I would love to have a Sunday like yours. Ahh…
I loved your interview and I wish I could have gotten on right away. Kids (see my first point). LOL!
I’m hoping to get a copy of A Reliable Wife next week. If only he was going to be there on a weekend. I know you’ll do a good job writing about it.
Thanks for the Twitter shout out today!
Sandy, things on the panties-throwing front are looking good for Mr. Ferris. Very good. But I have to love more than one book for an author to get on that list, so we’ll see. Hubby has AND THEN WE CAME TO THE END on his TBR. If I can ferret it away for a quick read and come up with an equally positive conclusion, watch out world.
I had the rain here in NY but not the cozy couch – I spent the afternoon at a baby shower – would have much preferred to be home with a book and coffee! The good news is I will have time for all that tomorrow since I have the day off – yay!
I listened to David Sedaris this week too and really liked it – he is great! Made me resolve to listen to more comedy on my ipod to liven up the walk to work.
Have a great week!
Aren’t days like this the best? Sounds like you enjoyed it!
I missed your interview. I’m going to try to listen to it this week while I’m working!
Okay, Sandy, I just finished the book (like, two minutes ago), and I take back what I said before about having to wait for another book or so. THE UNNAMED was amazing, and Ferris is most certainly on the panties-worthy list now.
I have to catch up with your THIB! interview via the podcast. It’s downloaded and waiting to be put on my iPod
.
I liked THEN WE CAME TO THE END a lot and am looking forward to reading THE UNNAMED, so I’m glad to know you liked it so much (although I don’t think I’ve EVER considered an author worth throwing panties at
).
And we’re expecting to get rain nearly all week, which is an Event in Southern California.
D’oh! I meant THEN WE CAME TO THE END. (I always want to stick “And” at the beginning of that title for some reason!)
Lazy Sunday… sounds like a fantasy! Do you have tomorrow off? The only thing that beats a lazy Sunday is a lazy Sunday in the middle of a three-day weekend
Lady-wood? Wow….
Not even Michael Chabon, Florinda?
I am off from work today and it is pouring outside! A perfect reading day! We don’t get much rain here but it’s supposed to rain for 5 days straight and the wind is insane. With our wildfires, rains like this cause a lot of problems with mudslides, etc. Right now I am watching all of my patio furniture get blown across the backyard. Ugh.
However, I am almost done with The Hunger Games and reading like 3 other books but I am feeling the need for a really juicy, page-turner. Especially on a day like this. Not sure what I’ll pull out.
OK, yes, Michael Chabon would definitely qualify, if I were into panty-throwing. (I had a feeling you might call me on that, Rebecca!
)
