My full-on confession of Christmas dorkitude…
2009 at 9am Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
Maybe it’s the fact that almost all of the big days in my year happen between Thanksgiving and early January. Maybe it’s the lights. Maybe it’s the food and the family and the abundantly flowing wine.
My love for the holidays could stem from many things…
But I think it’s really the music. This time of year turns me into a giant dorky mushball of a woman who sings Christmas songs in the shower, in the car, in the kitchen, and everywhere in between. I just can’t help myself.
I love the classics. I, too, am dreaming of a white Christmas, or to be home for Christmas, or to be home for a white Christmas, where I’ll roast chestnuts over an open fire and build a snowman and pretend he’s Parson Brown.
And I love the contemporary stuff. Sarah McLachlan makes me wish I had a river to skate away on, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra gives me Christmas music you can headbang to, and Over the Rhine makes me wish, for just a second, that all I’d ever get for Christmas was blue. Most recently, Sugarland has me convinced that everything really does look better in gold and green.
I’m telling you, I love Christmas music, so when My Friend Amy asked me to guest blog about it I couldn’t pass it up. Head over to her blog to find out the story behind my favorite Christmas song.
In the meantime, enjoy this guiltiest of guilty pleasures.

Did you notice that Jordan isn’t wearing anything under that leather jacket? And my mother let me watch this when I was eight?
What’s your favorite Christmas song or guilty pleasure?

Um, I had that on tape. “This One’s for the Children” was on the B-side. *blush*
The old Alvin and the Chipmunks album brings back lots of happy Christmas memories–though I can understand how we adults get annoyed with the singing fast.
I had it on tape, too! In fact, I kept the tape and had it all the way up through my sophomore year in college, then my roommate’s stereo ate it. That was a very sad day.
I loved your guest post! Just to make you feel OK in your dorkitude, I cry every time I hear “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”.
Glad to know I’m not alone, Sandy! And I loved your comment on the guest post…I sure hope “There’s nothing quite like Rebecca” is a good thing
Oh, my gosh I forgot about this song! I loved NKOTB back in the day
So hilarious now…
I have always loved that song… and then when Love Actually came out I had a whole new reason to love it, since that became one of my top 3 Christmas movies and I always think about the little boy on the drums when I hear it now.
One of the most fun Christmas albums ever – Twisted Christmas by Twisted Sister. Talk about some headbanging Christmas music! Their ‘heavy metal’ take on The 12 Days of Christmas is just great.
Oh, your mom was so liberal! LOL I’m impressed that you can remember their names!
I desperately need the Trans Siberian Orchestra cd! I love Christmas in Sarajevo.
Are you kidding? I not only knew all of their names, I had the dolls! (Donnie used to get naked with Barbie, but that’s a secret.)
Oh yeah! It’s all good! I am entertained by you on an almost daily basis!
Wait! They’re missing one? Where was Jordan’s brother, what’s his name? Crap…I’m a horrible Bostonian not knowing.
I think my favorite Christmas music is The Nutcracker Suite. It’s dorky I know but I just love it.
Happy holidays!
You can’t go wrong with a classic, Michelle. I love The Nutcracker also.
It’s kind of hard to hear the song over all of the girlish screams. Did you squeal like that, too?
I’m sure I did. My 8th birthday part was NKOTB-themed. Sad, but true.
First of all, Jordan was totally my favorite so it’s nice seeing him back in his prime with nothing on under the jacket. In a confession I may regret as soon as I post this, I’ll let you know that “Hangin Tough” is currently and always will be on my ipod.
Second, and so much less embarrassing, Christmas at my house starts the day after Thanksgiving with the collector’s edition Elvis Christmas cd, complete with a pop-up Graceland proudly displayed on the mantle. Also, after having danced in it five times, I can’t have Christmas without music from the Nutcracker.
PS, just want to say in case I never have that I love your blog.
Thanks for joining in the confessions! (But I have to break it to you that Donnie was the hottest….then again, I’ve always had a thing for the bad boys.)
And no need to be embarrassed about Hangin’ Tough…I have the NKOTB greatest hits on my iPod….and I know the original dance to The Right Stuff.
Oh, it makes me so glad when I find other people who know the dances!
My favorite traditional Christmas song is “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” especially after I found out how Longfellow wrote the poem after he suffered a disillusioning series of tragedies. It’s the story of regaining one’s faith, a wonderful song.
My favorite modern Christmas song in recent years has been Elvis’s “Holly Leaves and Christmas Trees.” I guess I’ve been in a wistful mood. But I still like Frosty and Rudolph too!
