My secret Santa has a sense of humor…

So, I came home from a very long day today and saw a box stamped “media mail” sitting in my mailbox. Nothing unusual there. But then I noticed that it wasn’t from an author or publisher, and I didn’t recognize the name on the return address.

And I knew that Santa had come to visit! (My secret santa from the book blogger holiday swap, that is.)

I scurried inside and tore open the package to see a note. And here’s what it said:

Dear Rebecca,

Happy holidays!  I looked around your awesome blog and saw your propensity to listen to audiobooks and read Nicholas Sparks. So I hope you enjoy this audiobook of Dear John.

And then I let out a ginormous groan and began thinking some very un-holidayish thoughts.

Really? Did my Santa just glance at my blog without actually reading the posts?  How blind do you have to be to not see that another Nicholas Sparks book is just about the last thing I would ever want or need? Is this some kind of cosmic joke?

And just when I was reaching the heights of grinchiness, it occurred to me that I should actually OPEN THE PACKAGE.

(I mean, if I was going to try to exchange it for something that wasn’t written by Nicholas Sparks, I’d have to look at it sometime, right?)

So imagine my relief and joy when I peeled back the wrapping and saw this looking up at me:

I LOVE the Dexter series on Showtime and have been hoping to either read the books or listen to the audio versions, so this is simply perfect. People of Richmond beware: I’ll be so caught up in this story, there’s no telling how many turns I’ll miss!

Thanks a million to my secret Santa, Jazz from Miss Danaidae.  Your little trick worked, and I love the gift!
