My secret Santa has a sense of humor…
2009 at 7pm Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
So, I came home from a very long day today and saw a box stamped “media mail” sitting in my mailbox. Nothing unusual there. But then I noticed that it wasn’t from an author or publisher, and I didn’t recognize the name on the return address.
And I knew that Santa had come to visit! (My secret santa from the book blogger holiday swap, that is.)
I scurried inside and tore open the package to see a note. And here’s what it said:
Dear Rebecca,
Happy holidays! I looked around your awesome blog and saw your propensity to listen to audiobooks and read Nicholas Sparks. So I hope you enjoy this audiobook of Dear John.
And then I let out a ginormous groan and began thinking some very un-holidayish thoughts.
Really? Did my Santa just glance at my blog without actually reading the posts? How blind do you have to be to not see that another Nicholas Sparks book is just about the last thing I would ever want or need? Is this some kind of cosmic joke?
And just when I was reaching the heights of grinchiness, it occurred to me that I should actually OPEN THE PACKAGE.
(I mean, if I was going to try to exchange it for something that wasn’t written by Nicholas Sparks, I’d have to look at it sometime, right?)
So imagine my relief and joy when I peeled back the wrapping and saw this looking up at me:

I LOVE the Dexter series on Showtime and have been hoping to either read the books or listen to the audio versions, so this is simply perfect. People of Richmond beware: I’ll be so caught up in this story, there’s no telling how many turns I’ll miss!
Thanks a million to my secret Santa, Jazz from Miss Danaidae. Your little trick worked, and I love the gift!

That is too funny! I hope you enjoy Dexter!
LOL!!! That is hilarious!
Jazz pretty much rocks for that!
What an awesome Secret Santa! Jazz is my new favorite blogger for teasing you about Nicholas Sparks.
Sorry about your disappointment about not getting to listen to DEAR JOHN, but maybe Santa will still get that for you. If you’re bad, that is.
Jazz rocks! Well done!
So, being on the naughty list isn’t going to be fun anymore?
Excellent prank- good thing you didn’t wait until christmas to open your gift. You’d have been grouchy for days
I think you might have cried if it actually WAS a nicholas sparks audio book – i wonder if he reads his own stuff. maybe he does a special Q&A at the end about himself
great gift though! the books are amazing!
Excellent surprise!
Santa’s got a sense of humor…I love it!
hahah that’s so funny! Well done, Santa, err, Jazz
lol! Jazz is awesome
I bet she really had you going – an extra fun surprise!
Enjoy, Rebecca.
What’s funny is that I actually read the first note, got so thrown off by it that I took the dog for a walk to calm down, and only then discovered what was really inside!
That’s too funny
Enjoy your gift!
Holy crap that is awesome! I love the Dexter books and the series. I’m dying to see the next episode. John Lithgow is so impressive in this season
Oooh, I like her sense of humor! I think I might have cried a little before I opened that package. I will admit to you that I actually did read Dear John back when it came out (it was my first, and I didn’t know better! Sue me!) and I honestly felt nauseated when I finished. Ugh!
IIIEEEEEH I love Dexter! Lucky grrl! (Ha, but Santa fooled ya, didn’t she?!) What a fun story
We watch Dexter, too- and I’ve always wondered if I’d like the books. What a nice gift!
Fantastic! I should have tried to be tricky with my Santee, but it didn’t occur to me
Enjoy!
I love that your secret santa has a twisted side!!
That is hilarious! Good work, Jazz, and enjoy Dexter!
Good one!!!
And I love love love “Dexter” on Showtime. I have a huge crush on Dexter (as played by Michael C. Hall). This is one time I abandoned the books for the show — I think the show is better actually! Enjoy!
I’ve never read the books, so I’m excited to try it out…but I think you’d be hard pressed to find a TV show that has better writing than Dexter. Love it.
Ha, ha! That’s hilarious! Glad you liked your gift! =)
That’s too funny!
What a very fun secret santa you had
