What are the best book club selections of 2009?
2009 at 6pm Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
‘Tis the season for the flurry of “best of” book lists, and while I’m still working on my personal lists, I’m loving the chance to peek at what everyone else—book bloggers and major media outlets alike—is choosing.
A few weeks ago, Peter at Flashlight Worthy contacted me about a post he was working on to collect the best book club books for 2009, and even though I’m no book club expert (in fact, I just lost my book club virginity this spring), I spent enough time as a bookseller to know when a book begs for discussion, and I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to talk about one of my favorite books of the year, which, incidentally, is also a perfect book club selection.
Whether you’re a book club veteran like Ti or a newbie like me, you’ll find something great over at Flashlight Worthy, where ten book bloggers select the best book club books of 2009.
Go on, now. I’ll be here when you’re ready for more.
And in the meantime, feel free to tell me about the best book your book club read this year, or the book you’d most recommend for book club reading. You can never have to many suggestions!

I’m heading over right now. I was a virgin until late this year, but have been a little perturbed with their selections. And the thing is, we don’t get to vote. We just all take turns choosing the book. So far, it seems the m.o. for book selecting has been to race by Barnes & Noble 30 minutes before they arrive at the meeting. Argh. I always off-handedly try to mention some great books I’ve been wanting to read, but they ignore me!
I love this and I’m proud that I “know” all but one of the bloggers listed!
Love my book club so I’m heading over to see what we’ve missed that we can add for next year.
I totally agree with your selection – it’s a great book-club choice (although I read it on my own)!
I read it on my own, too…..then when I discovered I couldn’t stop talking about it at work (to customers and coworkers and anyone who would listen), I figured I should recommend it for the book club.
We haven’t read any of those books in my book club – then again, we have a firm “no hardcover” rule, so really new books tend to be out. But I’ll keep this lest for next year – there are some great suggestions.
I think the “no hardcover” rule is pretty popular….the good news is that most of these will be out in paperback relatively soon, so you’re good to go!
[...] is putting out the call for book club reading recommendations. I participated back in December by sharing my favorite selection of the year, and it turns out that Peter’s recommendation lists have become quite popular. And the [...]
