The Sunday Salon 11.15.09
2009 at 11am Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
Well, it’s not exactly the quietest Sunday morning here in Book Lady Land (just in case you were wondering why I’m even out of bed at 9:30am). The hound was wide awake at 7:30 and refused to leave Bob and me alone. So we got up, made coffee and cinnamon rolls, and have spent the last hour—I kid you not, it’s been an hour—watching the dog knock all of the food out of her dish then chase it down one piece at a time. Sounds straightforward, right?
Not if you’re a basset hound and you get freaked out when your kibble gets too close to a wall or a chair or a bookshelf or a shoe that just happens to be lying on the floor. Oh no. Those things are all threats to your kibble, and they must be warned with loud, hound dog barking. Then the kibble must be rescued, very carefully, from its imperiled position. One. Piece. At. A. Time. I’m telling you, our kitchen floor is a minefield of dog food right now. And it’s not even 10am.
This is so not cool. Clearly, we need to sit Millie down and review the rules of Sunday with her.
Luckily, the rest of this week has been pretty great.
I kicked off the week with a giveaway for signed copies of Waiting for Columbus by Thomas Trofimuk. Entries closed on Friday night, and I’m happy to announce that Lena and Trish won the random drawing (I used random.org) and will be receiving two of the first signed U.S. editions of this most excellent book.
John Grogan guest blogged here on Tuesday, and then he made me squee at a decibel only dogs can hear when he posted about me on his blog.
I also featured a Book Club Breakdown of Gossip of the Starlings by Nina de Gramont and a review of Same Kind of Different As Me, in which I discuss the inspiring teacher who pushed me to read it and the many ways in which it made me cry.
Coming up this week: reviews of Bad Mother, In the Woods, and Two is Enough.
Hubby and I had a busy day running errands yesterday, then we went to see Boondock Saints II, which was enjoyable (though not nearly as good as the first movie), a bit campy at times, and really quite funny. Now that I’m snuggled safely into my favorite spot on the couch (did I mention I’m wearing brand new flannel pajama pants?), my plans for the day include napping, finishing Await Your Reply by Dan Chaon, catching up on blog reading, and more napping. A girl’s gotta recover from early morning hound dog wake-up calls somehow, you know.
What are you up to today?

I woke up too early this morning too. Unfortunately I can’t blame it on my dogs! I’ll be interested to read your review on In the Woods!
I need to go find a good hiding place for the Amaretto – someplace so good I won’t remember where I put it! In a literarily inspired moment, after having finished listening to THE NEON RAIN (by James Lee Burke; narrated by Will Paton) I decided I wanted to sample a Dr. Nut (also the favored drink of Ignatius in A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES by John Kennedy Toole.) Unfortunately, it’s no longer made. I found a recipe for a Dr. Nut cocktail online which is supposedly as close to a Dr. Nut in taste as can be found now. So last night I poured myself 4 oz of Amaretto over 2 oz Dr. Pepper over crushed ice. It’s very sweet but oddly addictive!
In other book news on this Sunday morning, Thomas Trofimuk mentions my DH in relation to WAITING FOR COLUMBUS, a mention that made me giggle as Mr. “God of Audiobooks” snores away in the next room!
As for me personally, I need to wrap up A CASE OF EXPLODING MANGOES (by Mohamed Hanif) for a MAN Booker group I’m in and; at least start LIFE AS WE KNEW IT (by Susan Beth Pfeffer) for the BOTN DysopYA Reading Challenge.
And finally, console yourself with the fact that you don’t suffer from “Amityville HOrror Insomnia!” This is when you wake up every morning around 03.15. The worst thing is, the more often it occurs, the harder it is to “break the habit!”
LOL re: Millie! Sounds like our household – only Raven doesn’t bark at her food. She does, however, eat it very slowly (she has to chew each piece at least three times) and removes the kibble from her bowl with her paw so she can eat it off the floor. Eating out of bowls is so not cool.
Sounds like you had a good week of reading. I’m trying to finish Wally Lamb’s latest so I can actually say I completed the Chunkster Challenge *laughs*
Congratulations to the winners!
My kids woke up around 5 this morning and wouldn’t leave me alone. I did manage to go back to sleep on them but that wasn’t until a few hours later.
Today I’m going to curl up with a book and just relax. Have a great Sunday.
Your dog has one heck of a sense of humour!
And I’m super glad I won. I had my fingers crossed for this one. And on this incredibly icky Sunday where I had to get up super early to work a side-job that I’m super not excited about…. it made my day <3
Silly puppy! I swear, dogs are pretty darned close to having kids. I have had the most exhausting weekend, and really REALLY would like to burrow down with a book and some cinnamon rolls. I don’t think it is in the cards for me though! But if I happen to fall down somewhere in the middle of the floor, I’m hoping they just leave me be.
I had a brief 30 minutes to myself before my daughter made her way down at 7am. I fed her and then we tackled her homework packet. The boy slept until 9am! I woke him, fed him and then made him clean his room. What else? Oh, I wrote a post for Booking Mama’s book club feature, posted my Sunday Salon post, and started my own book club! More on that later…
I am reading Her Fearful Symmetry and listening to the wind. It’s very windy and cold right now. My kids wanted to go to the park but the Looney Tunes marathon changed their minds. Thanks goodness.
That Millie she’s a precocious little pupster isn’t she? Me thinks a perscription for Proac to have “just in case” is definitely worth the effort.
My weekend was much like yours. A bit of errand running, some house hold chores, and then book club today with Swapna, Deborah and Jenn. It was great to see the ladies! Now I’m ensconced on the couch in my jammies with the television on doing a bit of blog work and catching up on my feed reading.
Have a great week!
Oh I can’t wait to watch Boondock Saints II. I absolutely loved the first one. Curious to see what you thought of In the Woods. Your dog sounds hilarious. I’d love to see a video of that. Does your dog do that every time he/she eats?
I’m up to being stoked I won WAITING FOR COLUMBUS! Totally made my day!
Weekends are workdays for me, unfortunately. But it doesn’t make them any less enticing!
