My horrible dare…
2009 at 2pm Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
So, by now it’s no secret that I’m not the biggest fan of Nicholas Sparks.
But can you believe I was crazy enough to agree to not only read one of his books on a dare but to let Trish pick it out for me?
And have you seen what she’s selected? She made an awesome video to tell you the whole story right here.
When you’re finished, come back and commisserate with me. Or laugh at me. Or just start counting the days until the Read-a-Thon on October 24th, which is when I’ll be curling up with this doozy of a book. Wanna bet I can get kicked off Twitter again for over-tweeting my limit while I’m reading it?

I cannot wait until you read this book. I’m seriously beside myself.
Oh, I can just see the Twitter-snark now. I may have to make you your own column in HootSuite so I can keep reading but still keep up with what you’re saying about this book.
Oh my gosh, I’ll feel so special if I merit my very own column, Jen!
I’m glad one of us is looking forward to it
Oh wow. Best of luck with that one! I picked up a Sparks book that my mom had lying around and got about 1/3 through it before I tossed it away in disgust. Since then, I have avoided his books – and any movie based on his books – like the plague. Here’s hoping you don’t catch the plague or any other form of illness from having to read that book.
Let me know where you want the Valium sent and whether you want it overnighted.
(Be brave. Right there with you…but I refuse to read it)
This is going to be so much fun to watch! Good Luck!
Oh, you poor soul!
I once made the mistake of reading a walk to remember, and really liking it. So I mooched a bunch of his other books. Read one. And got rid of them all, very, very, quickly!
OMG I almost peed my pants at Trish’s video!!! Hahahaha! Would it make you feel good to know that you are in good company with me? Let’s just say, I’m not a fan. I HAVE admittedly read a couple of his books, just for shits and grins. Yes, well, the books were easy to read…no more than a day or two. But I felt like I’d been slimed and manipulated after I was done. Like how you might feel if you go out on a date with a guy, he sweet-talks you and you give in and make out with him, then you never hear from him again. Ugh. Good luck to ya, girl.
I can’t tell you how happy I am to here that other 20-something females do not “get” the hype of Nicholas Sparks books. I’m not even sure I can put words into how I feel about his plots–über-cheesy, perhaps? I would say I’m too rooted in the real world to enjoy his books, but I enjoy plenty of other books that are over-the-top in their categories. I’m looking forward to reading what you have to say about the book after the 24th.
LMAO!
**pops popcorn**
Did she add insult to injury and get you a signed copy?
“Rebecca, I’m taking time from my busy schedule of worshiping myself and speed dailing Miley to sign my most magnificent masterpiece to you. If I could bronze not only this book but myself as well I would be sure to do so. ADORE ME!”
Come on…I like Sparks…for the most part
Have fun reading this one…
Hey…I should read my copy during read-a-thon too so we can chat about it together.
Ah ha ha!!! I cannot believe it, but I can. I can’t stop cackling about this. It could only be more perfect if I was actually going to be able to take part in the read-a-thon. My girls’ birthdays are that weekend… Oh, never mind, they’re not really that interesting yet…
That’s just evil, Trish!
Good luck Rebecca. Let the over-sentimentality begin!
I’m not a huge Nicholas Sparks fan but I admit I will probably get a kick out of your misery.
Ugh. I’m sorry. As a librarian I felt I needed to read one or two as a professional exercise. They are fairly well written, but I can’t stand them.
Cannot. Wait.
I can’t stand Nicholas Sparks either. I read A Walk to Remember years and years ago and I would never go there again! Good luck
One of my favorite high school memories is of my (male) physics teacher reading us ‘Message in a Bottle’ while we were working on projects. Not necessarily because of the book selection, but more that it was just nice to listen while we worked.
I just found your blog and I’m so excited about it! My friends and I are trying to start a book club, and I think I will be coming here often to get ideas (and not just for the club). We’re starting with ‘The Help.’
What?! You don’t like Nicholas Sparks!? I had no idea!
Seriously, though, I think you need to create your own hashtag so we can follow your lovely journey!
You know, his older stuff wasn’t that bad, but I have no interest in his newer books… Good luck on that!
I saw the dare video. It was so funny! I can’t wait to read your review!
