The "It's Monday, but I'm pretending it's Sunday" Salon
2009 at 5pm Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
Ah, Labor Day weekend at last, and I am feeling appropriately lazy. In fact, it’s 5pm, and I’m still in my pajamas. That’s my usual M.O. for Sundays, and I couldn’t be happier that this day has been so delightfully quiet and uneventful. Hubby was out of town most of last week, and it’s nice to have him back and joining me in our favorite spots on the couch.
Work and BBAW panel stuff have kept me really busy, so it’s been another slow week for blogging. This past week, I celebrated my parents’ 34th wedding anniversary and the release of Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. I also shared my August reading wrap-up and a few fun things I’ve seen around the interwebs.
In terms of reading, I finished Lorrie Moore’s new novel A Gate at the Stairs, and I’ve been thinking about my review for several days, but I just can’t get the mojo going.
Long story short, Moore’s writing is wonderful, and her use of language is creative and indicates a great erudition, but it left me feeling lukewarm because Moore never made me care about any of the characters. A Gate at the Stairs is one of those books you read for the writing, knowing that the plot is secondary, and sometimes that’s a really great thing. But in this case, the lovely writing wasn’t quite enough. Moore is a great writer, but if you’re unfamiliar, I’d suggest starting with her phenomenal short story collection Birds of America before you check out A Gate at the Stairs.
Coming this week: a review and giveaway of The Man Who Loved Books Too Much, a guest post from Brunonia Barry, and some pre-BBAW fun.
Now it’s back to the couch for some time with Craig Ferguson and Between the Bridge and the River.
What have you been up to this Labor Day weekend?
No related posts.

Oh I hate that when I can’t get the review mojo going! I have been tinkering around all day with my review for The Maze Runner, but it’s bleh. (Not the book, the review.) Trying to find a new book to start, but they all seem bleh too. (hmmm, maybe it’s me!)
It was just a normal day for us since my hubby worked, but a day on the sofa in my pj’s reading sounds wonderful.
Although I have the day off, it’s been a rather hectic day! I’ve been busy preparing for the week and now it is 5:16pm and the day has passed me by. I did manage to watch Twilight, as I had not seen the movie and right now we are making pizza. I may pop another silly 80′s movie into the DVD player. I managed to watch several silly movies this weekend, what’s one more, right?
I reviewed The Lace Reader today and really enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to your guest post this week.
My Labor Day weekend was fine until I got a speeding ticket. What sucks is that I’ll be using my National Book Festival money to pay for the ticket. I’m really bummed about that.
I’ve been reading and cleaning up emails and stuff like that!! Hope the mojo kicks in and delivers for you!!
I feel that way about Rushdie (which is why I’ve never finished any of his books).
I’ve spent the weekend both playing catch up and trying to get ahead with the blog.
A bonus wekend day seems meant for lazieness, I think.
As lazy as I was I didn’t have the opportunity to read as much as I would have liked. I did get a trip into IKEA and constructed a new shelving unit for my DVDs. I also watched Season 4 of Supernatural and Season 1 of Leverage so I definitely got my television fix in.
I’ve started Bran Hambric and admit its a bit slow going. It’s a decent book but for some reason I’m struggling to fully get into it. Maybe that is why I spent more time on the couch with the tv than the book.
One of the great ironies in our household is that my daughter tends NOT to enjoy trips to the library or bookstore so this Saturday, when she mentioned that she wanted to go to the library, I seized the moment and off we went. She chose four books and my DH picked up at least six for himself! I actually managed to restrain myself, knowing that I have a number of books back home on tap and even returned two books that I stopped deluding myself about reading! Other than than, I started walking easy hiking trails, trying to jumpstart my metabolism and ended up way too tired at the end of the day to anything more than crash into bed!
Oh no — I read a great review of “A Gate at the Stairs” today and I was planning on reading it. Should I rethink it? Usually lovely writing isn’t enough for me, either. Maybe I will take your advice and check out “Birds of America” instead.
I’d say it was still worth the read, but quite deserving of being bumped to the top of the pile.
I should have done an “it’s Sunday Salon on Monday” this past week, but I didn’t! I’m not sure about A Gate at the Stairs, so I’m glad to read your thoughts.

Labor day weekend = me trying to catch up on blogging and failing miserably. Then I got thrown back into an incredibly hectic week. The result? I’m replying to labor day posts over a week later. Still, I will catch up. This week is hopefully going to be a little less hectic for me so I’ll be able to participate in BBAW and have some fun!
