The "It's Monday, but I'm pretending it's Sunday" Salon

Ah, Labor Day weekend at last, and I am feeling appropriately lazy. In fact, it’s 5pm, and I’m still in my pajamas. That’s my usual M.O. for Sundays, and I couldn’t be happier that this day has been so delightfully quiet and uneventful. Hubby was out of town most of last week, and it’s nice to have him back and joining me in our favorite spots on the couch.

Work and BBAW panel stuff have kept me really busy, so it’s been another slow week for blogging.  This past week, I celebrated my parents’ 34th wedding anniversary and the release of Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins.  I also shared my August reading wrap-up and a few fun things I’ve seen around the interwebs.

In terms of reading, I finished Lorrie Moore’s new novel A Gate at the Stairs, and I’ve been thinking about my review for several days, but I just can’t get the mojo going.

Long story short, Moore’s writing is wonderful, and her use of language is creative and indicates a great erudition, but it left me feeling lukewarm because Moore never made me care about any of the characters. A Gate at the Stairs is one of those books you read for the writing, knowing that the plot is secondary, and sometimes that’s a really great thing. But in this case, the lovely writing wasn’t quite enough. Moore is a great writer, but if you’re unfamiliar, I’d suggest starting with her phenomenal short story collection Birds of America before you check out A Gate at the Stairs.

Coming this week: a review and giveaway of The Man Who Loved Books Too Much, a guest post from Brunonia Barry, and some pre-BBAW fun.

Now it’s back to the couch for some time with Craig Ferguson and Between the Bridge and the River.

What have you been up to this Labor Day weekend?
