BBAW 2009

The second annual Book Blogger Appreciation Week (brainchild of My Friend Amy) is coming soon—September 14th through 18th—and I’m getting excited. You only have a few more days to nominate your favorite blogs (nominatons close on the 15th), so head on over to sign up, nominate blogs, and join the fun.

In the meantime, here are my responses to the new BBAW meme, designed to help newbies get a better sense of what it’s all about.

What was the highlight of BBAW for you last year?

There were several highlights for me. The Book Lady’s Blog was only a couple months old last September, and it was just starting to build up some steam. I had a great time “meeting ” other bloggers and increasing traffic to my blog, and I was thrilled to be nominated for an award.  But the highlight, as I’m sure many other participants have said, was discovering so many other great book blogs.

Before BBAW, I only followed 25 or 30 blogs on a regular basis.  I’d take a daily trip through my blogroll but didn’t really see the point in using something like Google Reader. Afterward, I had no choice but to start, and now I subscribe to almost 300 blogs and have even hosted a “Clean Up Your Feedreader” challenge for Natasha’s Bloggiesta.

Reading is something we do alone, but books are meant to be shared and discussed, and it’s the sense of community I gained from participating in BBAW that really made the week special.

What is one new blog you discovered last year during BBAW?

Where to start?  The roster of blogs I read quadrupled (at least!) in size thanks to last year’s BBAW. I’m generally pretty bad about remembering how/when I first connected with other bloggers, so the answer to this question is both “I have no idea” and “there are too many to count.”

What tips would you share to help others get the most out of their BBAW experiences?

Participate in the daily writing themes and really take advantage of the opportunity to visit new blogs and make new connections. But don’t try to visit every single blog that participates, or you’ll make yourself crazy. The beautiful thing about BBAW is that it celebrates bloggers who focus on many different kinds of books. Spend some time visiting blogs that are similar to yours so you can get new ideas, and make some time to visit a few that are outside your normal areas of interest just to see what they’re all about.

And be prepared to see your Google Reader explode and your TBR list grow exponentially.

If you haven’t already registered for BBAW, do it now!

If you also participated last year, I’d love to hear about your experiences…and if you’re a newbie, feel free to holla back here to ask questions and see what others have to say.
