Book Blogger Appreciation Week (and a meme)
2009 at 9am Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
The second annual Book Blogger Appreciation Week (brainchild of My Friend Amy) is coming soon—September 14th through 18th—and I’m getting excited. You only have a few more days to nominate your favorite blogs (nominatons close on the 15th), so head on over to sign up, nominate blogs, and join the fun.
In the meantime, here are my responses to the new BBAW meme, designed to help newbies get a better sense of what it’s all about.
What was the highlight of BBAW for you last year?
There were several highlights for me. The Book Lady’s Blog was only a couple months old last September, and it was just starting to build up some steam. I had a great time “meeting ” other bloggers and increasing traffic to my blog, and I was thrilled to be nominated for an award. But the highlight, as I’m sure many other participants have said, was discovering so many other great book blogs.
Before BBAW, I only followed 25 or 30 blogs on a regular basis. I’d take a daily trip through my blogroll but didn’t really see the point in using something like Google Reader. Afterward, I had no choice but to start, and now I subscribe to almost 300 blogs and have even hosted a “Clean Up Your Feedreader” challenge for Natasha’s Bloggiesta.
Reading is something we do alone, but books are meant to be shared and discussed, and it’s the sense of community I gained from participating in BBAW that really made the week special.
What is one new blog you discovered last year during BBAW?
Where to start? The roster of blogs I read quadrupled (at least!) in size thanks to last year’s BBAW. I’m generally pretty bad about remembering how/when I first connected with other bloggers, so the answer to this question is both “I have no idea” and “there are too many to count.”
What tips would you share to help others get the most out of their BBAW experiences?
Participate in the daily writing themes and really take advantage of the opportunity to visit new blogs and make new connections. But don’t try to visit every single blog that participates, or you’ll make yourself crazy. The beautiful thing about BBAW is that it celebrates bloggers who focus on many different kinds of books. Spend some time visiting blogs that are similar to yours so you can get new ideas, and make some time to visit a few that are outside your normal areas of interest just to see what they’re all about.
And be prepared to see your Google Reader explode and your TBR list grow exponentially.
If you haven’t already registered for BBAW, do it now!
If you also participated last year, I’d love to hear about your experiences…and if you’re a newbie, feel free to holla back here to ask questions and see what others have to say.

I agree with your advice. I cannot wait for this year’s BBAW
I don’t remember how many blogs I started out reading, but I do remember adding subscription after subscription at last year’s BBAW! And now, it’s all just hopeless! Guess I need another Bloggiesta!
This is my first time participating. It’s been fun so far!! I can only imagine how my blog roll will look when this is done!
Let me introduce myself: I’m Jennifer and I’m completely NEW to bloggging – I signed up for BBAW when I saw you post about it last week in hopes that I would be able to do most of the things you talked about in this post. I’m hoping to meet some bloggers, get ideas, make friends, expand my blog roll, ect. Basically, I’m still feeling things out. Any advice is very much appreciated. Ie: I don’t even know what googlereader is. Scary.
BBAW newbie here!
I’m quite excited to have the opportunity to participate this year. Like you I tend to enjoy the community aspects a great deal and know that some of the writing prompts/challenges will add great material to my blog. I’m also looking forward to meeting up with new bloggers and seeing what they have for the rest of us to enjoy.
Wow! 300 blogs in your reader! I can’t wait to start adding more to mine. Good advice. . .I’m looking forward to the week.
I hear you on the google reader overload!
and you were nominated for an award last year!
I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one with a hazy memory!
For reals, Jill! I don’t know how some bloggers manage to remember on which blog they first heard about a certain book or anything like that. I’m lucky if I can remember that I saw something first on any blog versus in the bookstore or from a friend or whatever.
This is my first year and I am really looking forward to participating!
First year here and I am enjoying reading about those who participated last year. Great tips
This sounds great. I have been blogging for a while but took a break this summer after having my son. BBAW sounds a great way to get back into it.
Cruising the BBAW meme participants. Like you said, the Google Reader will explode. I can’t decide if I’m looking forward to it or not. LOL Great advice!
*raises hand* I’m a BBAW newbie! I have a question – I put myself down for an interview and have been assigned a partner. What sort of questions are normally asked? Should I email a list?
All sorts of questions were asked last year….I’d suggest browsing around your partner’s blog and reading about him or her, then using that to structure your questions. You can send a list, or have a twitter conversation, or do an online chat. There’s really no set format for it.
