The Sunday Salon 8.2.09 and July Reading Wrap-Up
2009 at 11am Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
It’s been a rather uneventful week here, and sometimes that’s just so nice, you know? Things at work are in a nice place between summer slowness and the craziness of back-to-school; my best friend came down from DC Friday evening for some quality time; and I’m spending the morning on the couch with hubby, the hound, coffee, and the Travel Channel. Life is good.
Especially because I’ll be spending the afternoon with Her Fearful Symmetry, which is rocking my world. Yes, I know I’ve been gloating pretty incessantly about my acquisition of an ARC, but come on, you know you’d do the same thing.
July is usually a great reading month for me because we usually go on vacation in July, and that means extra reading time. This July was no exception. Here’s a look at what I read (and listened to) this month. Each cover links to my review, except Catching Fire, which I’ll discuss closer to the release date, and How to Buy a Love of Reading, which I’ll review this week.
Pick of the month? It’s a 3-way tie between Little Bee, Catching Fire, and The Strain (which was pure awesomeness on audio, read by Ron Perlman). And that’s a hard call to make because I really enjoyed almost all of this month’s reading.
What’s the best book you read in July?
And don’t forget—if you live in the DC area or know someone you’d like to win tickets for, there are a few days left in my giveaway for The Time Traveler’s Wife movie screening.
Happy Sunday to all!

Wow you had a super month!
I haven’t read a lot of wonderful books this year. I need to find a wowzer pretty soon or 2009 is going to be a dud reading year.
Maybe it is just me….
I love Suzanne Collins and hope this one is as good as her others.
You had a great month. I hope your vacation was enjoyable too.

I am so, so glad that you’re liking FEARFUL SYMMETRY, because I really want it to be good. When I was following the auction news, I read somewhere that one of the editors that had to step out of the auction said something like “it’s everything her fans will want” and that was when I went and pre-ordered it.
I know, sad.
Anyway, VERY EXCITED.
Okay, I just went back and reread the part of your “What I Read On My Summer Vacation” post about The Strain and I’m requesting it right now form the library. Just trying to figure out whether I’d prefer audio or print…
I just finished Kevin Roose’s book. I really liked it. I have to write the review this week. I want to read anything by Suzanne Collins because the reviews just make me think that they are awesome!
I think the best book I read in July was April & Oliver. I have a couple of your titles, so I’m glad to see they’re good.
It looks like you read some amazing quality books this month. I can’t wait for Catching Fire in particular, like pretty much everyone else who wasn’t lucky enough to get an ARC.
The audio with Ron Perlman was awesome, but I think I would have loved it in print even more because del Toro and Hogan knew how to choose the perfect words to describe things and just make you see them, and I’d have loved being able to savor the language more. Let me know what you choose–you can’t miss, either way.
If The Strain is as good as Little Bee and Catching Fire then I’ll have to buy a copy!
I never even thought of listening to The Strain!! If it’s read by Ron Perlman…well…I may have to get my hands on it.
Looks like you had a great month!
It’s very good, but in a totally different way. Definitely worth the read or listen.
I read The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane and I will be finishing up The Hunger Games after work tonight. It has been a really good reading month for me.
I love looking at all these covers – great titles this month!
I only overlap w/Perfume and Beat the Reaper … glad to know Little Bee is in your tops for the month; will add to my wish list.
Catching Fire is by far the best read I had in July. I was so happy to be able to borrow it from a fellow blogger and couldn’t put it down for a week. I even snuck in reading a few chapters during work, haha.
I’ve got a copy of The Strain on audio but haven’t yet had a chance to listen to it yet. I’ve got to get on that.
