Teaser Tuesdays: The Crying Tree

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page

I’m just about finished with Naseem Rakha’s debut novel The Crying Tree, so I thought I’d share these lines, from which the book takes its title. From page 37:

At the grave she reached for her daughter, but the girl broke free and took off for the tree.  It was a scraggly-looking thing, with a thick trunk and wizened branches holding fanlike tassels of green. A few minutes later, Bliss was back with a small handful of yellow, sap-filled pearls.

“They look like tears,” she said, showing them to her aunt carol and then her mother. “Like the tree’s crying.”

    Wow, what a description of sorrow. Sometimes, it’s good to read one of this, especially when one needs a bit of commiseration.

    that does sound very melancholy…but it’s nice sounding I think. It looks like one of those books that require deep thinking.
