The Sunday Salon 6.21.09
2009 at 1pm Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
Summer is now in full swing here in Richmond, and this Sunday finds me hunkered down in the comfort of the air conditioning and ready to enjoy some quality time with my current read—Jane Eyre—and the DVR. It’s been a busy week, and I had to work yesterday, so my weekend is short, and I intend to be as lazy as possible.n Ah, the joys of summer.
Here are the highlights from this week at The Book Lady’s Blog:
- I’m taking questions about some recent reads for a Weekly Geeks project—I haven’t reviewed Happens Every Day and Purge yet, so if there’s something you want to know, ask away!
- Carlos Ruiz Zafon’s new novel The Angel’s Game was released in the U.S. on Tuesday, and I am very excited about it. Have you read it?
- Neil White, author of In the Sanctuary of Outcasts, is taking questions for a reader participation interview. You know you’re curious.
- I reviewed a great, unconventional summer read: Last Days of Summer by Steve Kluger
- Let’s talk about reading challenges. I’m doing pretty well so far, and there’s one I don’t want you to miss.
The other big event of the week that begs discussion was the first Bloggiesta hosted by Natasha of Maw Books. I had to work Friday and Saturday—and we all know how lazy I like to be on Sundays—so I couldn’t participate in the full project, but I was thrilled to host the Clean Up Your Feedreader Mini-Challenge. I also squeezed in a few blog improvement mini-projects by changing my avatar and favicon. So if you see me commenting on other blogs, or if you follow me on Twitter, don’t be confused. It’s the same Book Lady, just a different photo.

I also took some time to clean up my Google Reader, clear out dead and inactive blogs, and delete subscriptions to blogs I don’t really follow anymore. And I finally got around to adding folders, which really does make a big difference.
I’m about halfway through Jane Eyre now, so I’m planning to spend the afternoon making some more headway with Ms. Bronte, napping, and working on upcoming reviews for Happens Every Day and Purge. What have you been up to this week? Any great books you want to recommend?
Hope your Sunday is delightfully restful and full of good reading.

Sounds like you have a great day planned. I need to clean my blog up and would have loved to join in with the Bloggiesta but my weekend has just been so busy.
It is really amazing how much folders help in Google Reader, isn’t it? I wish I’d done it much sooner.
I really like your new avatar and favicon (saw it on Twitter this morning first.)!
I like the new photo and the favicon looks good!
In The Sanctuary of the Outcasts sounds fascinating. Thanks for mentioning it. Have a great day!
Love your new avatar/favicon!
That reading challenge sounds like fun…I just have to figure out if I can juggle it in!
Love the new avatar – very cute!
I’m just about to finish Prayers for Sale, a novel by Sandra Dallas about a woman’s life in the Colorado gold mining country, circa 1932. I’m really enjoying it, but I love historical fiction.
I just bought The Angel’s Game today. I would have gotten it earlier but I was out of town. I can’t wait to read it! I also wish I’d had a chance to participate in the bloggiesta. I have so much I need to catch up on!
Hope you Sunday turned out exactly how you wanted it to!! I like the new photo…cute!!
Hope ya didn’t delete me from your reader… er, I hope you had me there to begin with and didn’t delete me… lol.
I’ve got Angel’s Game on my ARC-alanche pile. I’ll get to it someday *sigh* I’m reading as fast as I can, dagnabit!
The Last Lecture is a fast, inspiring read, I’m almost finished with it. I could’ve read it all in the first day, but I’ve been slowly chewing on it. It’s a good book. I’m also completely engrossed in Water for Elephants, I know.. I’m late to the game. It’s magical and fantastic.
Have a great week
Wow! And I thought I was late to the game when I read Water for Elephants a couple years ago. I’m usually hesitant about bestsellers, what with the lowest common denominator factor and all, but when I ran out of books at my in-laws’ home and my mother-in-law suggested it, I wondered why it had taken me so long. Engrossed is the perfect word for such a great read.
(and no, I didn’t delete you from my reader….even though it missed you for several months.)
Missed Sunday Salon again this week, so I’m trying to catch up a bit today.
Good luck with Jane Eyre!
I LOVE the new photo!! And I too am looking forward to The Angel’s Game.
