Teaser Tuesdays: Lost Boy
2009 at 9am Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
- Grab your current read
- Open to a random page
- Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
- BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
- Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
I’m currently reading Lost Boy by Brent W. Jeffs, who is the nephew of Warren Jeffs, the now-incarcerated leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS). I am fascinated by religious sects and cults and have done a ton of reading about this p0lygamist group, so I’m enjoying it. Here are a few teasers from the prologue, page 3:
Even normal memory has gaps, but traumatic memory is even more discontinuous. This is my story, which put me back together.
So far, the writing is okay (and Jeffs has a co-author to help with that), but his story is very interesting, especially because this is the first time I’ve read about the FLDS experience from a man’s perspective.
What are you reading this week?
No related posts.

My mom is reading one right now written by one of the girls from this sect. She has a lot to say about it and it is quite shocking. I’m not sure I care to read about it just because I think it would make me so mad.
Hey, Rebecca! I’m reading Loved Walked In, which had me hooked from the beginning (not that I ever doubted you, of course). de Los Santos uses language the way it should be used, with declarations like: “This is the kind of conversation it was: convivial, both of us making gifts to each other of little funny stories, sort of shining them up and handing them over and being nice to each other about them. We didn’t drag out our secret souls and let them dance naked around the restaurant, but our little stories were glimpses into the interior, colorful postcards from the lands of Martin and Cornelia. A good way to begin.”
I’m only 70 pages in, but you were right and I’m in love with this book…and everyone else should be, too.
I just read Escape by Carolyn Jessop (with Laura Palmer). As with your book, the writing is just okay, but the story itself is fascinating (and horrifying). I’m looking forward to reading your review!
I read Escape a year or two ago and had the same response. Of the memoirs written by women who were former FLDS members, I think Shattered Dreams by Irene Spencer is the best written. She was married into the church in the 1950s, so while her story doesn’t contain some of the more famous characters we meet in Escape and Lost Boy, it sheds light on how the church developed, and it is very compelling.

Thanks, Rebecca. I’ll keep an eye out for Shattered Dreams.
Interesting teaser and I’m always interested in reading about past members of the FLDS.
I just got this one and hope to start reading it soon.
