Surprise Success!
2009 at 7pm Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
Just popping in to say hello before I return to my extended weekend of laziness. My surprise for hubby’s birthday went off without a hitch, and we had a great mini-getaway in D.C.
I intended to take pictures to document the trip, but I never managed to take my camera out of my purse. Come to think of it, I always intend to take pictures when we go on trips, and I hardly ever manage to take my camera out of my purse. I just get caught up in enjoying what’s going on, which is a great thing in itself, but I always wish I had photos.
Anyway, we checked into the Liaison Hotel at Capitol Hill yesterday afternoon and, because it wasn’t sunny enough to hang out by the pool, proceeded to take a nice long nap in our room, which looked just like this:

The hotel had a pretty perfect location—we were just a few blocks from the Capitol and Union Station and about a 15 minute walk to Chinatown. After our nap, we gussied up a bit and took the short walk to Matchbox, a vintage pizza bistro recommended by none other than Swapna of S. Krishna’s Books. We knew from the minute we walked in that it was our kind of place. We got on the waiting list (only 25 minutes), got some drinks, and settled in for a great round of people watching.
Dinner at Matchbox was delicious! We started with mozzi carozzi, which is bread covered in mozzarella cheese, fresh tomatoes, and basil, then deep fried. Why no one ever thought to deep fry bread covered in all that goodness before is beyond me, and I’m so glad I discovered it last night. So good! Hubs also had a salad, then for dinner, he had one of their signature pizzas, and I had this amazing steak covered in a red wine & shallot reduction sauce. We’re not shy about expressing our delight in good food, and I’m not going to lie, we might have resembled this a bit:

After dinner, we walked back past our hotel and up to the Capitol, where a big Memorial Day concert was being held. We hung around for a few minutes, then headed back to The Liaison to chill out on the funky couches by the rooftop pool. We both really loved the design of the hotel; it is hip and modern with a bit of a retro twist, and I so wish I had taken pictures.
We slept in this morning, then I popped out to the Starbucks on the corner to deliver coffee and breakfast in bed to the birthday boy. Then we took another short walk around the area, grabbed some lunch, and started the journey back home. A few hours and one quick stop at IKEA (can you believe I’ve never been in one before?) later, we picked up the pup and arrived back at our house. It was a quick trip—we were only gone for about 28 hours—but it’s amazing how rejuvenating that short time away can be.
It’s time to continue the birthday celebrations here at home this evening, so I’m going to sign off now. Hope you all had a wonderful weekend, and thanks for your happy thoughts and good luck wishes with my big surprise. They definitely helped!

Sounds like it all went off without a hitch! Thanks for sharing it with us. That restaurant sure sounds good
I would love to lay down on a bed just like that right now! Oh, and that Rachel Ray is sooo….Mmmmm! HA! She is pretty cute.
Thanks for sharing!
So glad you had a great time! I’m the same way with pictures. I bring the camera but rarely take it out. In college this was okay since I had a friend who ALWAYS was taking pictures, but in the past year or so I’ve tried to be more proactive about taking my own.
Sounds like you had a great time. Great room too. Enjoy the rest of your lazy time.

[...] I’ll try to keep it interesting nonetheless. I kicked off the week by surprising hubby with a quick trip to DC for his birthday. We both took Tuesday off as well, and I can’t say I was too happy about [...]
