The [Sneaky] Salon 5.24.09

tssbadge1 I’m in the Salon several hours earlier than usual this morning because I’m preparing to pull off a big surprise for hubby’s birthday. Between the two of us, he’s the one who usually comes up with great plans and unexpected celebrations—when he proposed to me, it was the culmination of months of sneakiness and countless untruths—and it seems like I never get to be the one to do those kinds of things for him.

Well, his birthday is tomorrow, and we’ve been looking forward to a 4-day weekend for a while (we both have Monday off for Memorial Day here in the states and took Tuesday off as well). Hubs thinks we’re just going to lie around and watch movies and indulge in 2 extra days’ worth of our usual Sunday behavior, but he is wrong. In a few hours, I’ll wake him up, get him breakfast, and tell him we’ve been invited out to our friends’ farm for a cookout. Once we’re there, I’ll tell him that part of his gift is that our friend is going to keep Millie (our basset hound) for the weekend so we can have some time alone together. Then we’ll go out to lunch, and when he thinks we’re going home, I’ll just happen to get on the highway going the opposite direction.

Now, hubby’s a quick one, so it won’t take him long to notice that I’m going the wrong direction.  When he does, I’ll smirk with glee at (finally!) pulling off a surprise and inform him that we’re going up to D.C. for the night—don’t worry, honey, I packed a bag for you and hid it in the trunk— to lounge by the pool at a swanky hotel and enjoy a romantic dinner out.  Which reminds me—thanks to all of you D.C. peeps who recommended restaurants on Twitter. I’ve narrowed it down to a few great options, and I’ll let you know where we end up going.

It’s going to a hot & sunny day here in the mid-Atlantic region, and I think it will be perfect for a little pool-side laziness and reading. Cross your fingers and send happy thoughts for me and my birthday surprise!

In book-related news, I had a very busy week and didn’t get much reading done. I was only able to post one review, of The Blue Notebook by James Levine, and I’m about 30 pages from the end of The Little Book by Selden Edwards….I’m heading off to finish it in just a few minutes. This week, I also featured a new Adventures in Bookselling post and a literary tour of Richmond for Weekly Geeks.

And oh yeah, I decided to host the BEAtwittyparty—a virtual pity party for those of us who can’t attend BEA—just a few weeks after seeing the error of my ways in deciding that Twitter isn’t entirely useless and annoying. I’m telling you, it’s all because of having wireless internet now. I never wanted to tweet before because it just meant more time up in the office away from the rest of the house, but now that I can do it from the couch while watching TV and hanging with hubby, it’s all good.  If you want to join the Twitty Party fun, click here to sign up, and start planning your commisseration!

That’s it for me this morning. I’m off to finish up The Little Book, sneak hubby’s car to the gas station for a quick fill-up, and start working my birthday magic.

What are you up to this Sunday? If you’re in the states, do you have any fun Memorial Day plans?  Read any great books this week?
