The [Sneaky] Salon 5.24.09
2009 at 8am Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
I’m in the Salon several hours earlier than usual this morning because I’m preparing to pull off a big surprise for hubby’s birthday. Between the two of us, he’s the one who usually comes up with great plans and unexpected celebrations—when he proposed to me, it was the culmination of months of sneakiness and countless untruths—and it seems like I never get to be the one to do those kinds of things for him.
Well, his birthday is tomorrow, and we’ve been looking forward to a 4-day weekend for a while (we both have Monday off for Memorial Day here in the states and took Tuesday off as well). Hubs thinks we’re just going to lie around and watch movies and indulge in 2 extra days’ worth of our usual Sunday behavior, but he is wrong. In a few hours, I’ll wake him up, get him breakfast, and tell him we’ve been invited out to our friends’ farm for a cookout. Once we’re there, I’ll tell him that part of his gift is that our friend is going to keep Millie (our basset hound) for the weekend so we can have some time alone together. Then we’ll go out to lunch, and when he thinks we’re going home, I’ll just happen to get on the highway going the opposite direction.
Now, hubby’s a quick one, so it won’t take him long to notice that I’m going the wrong direction. When he does, I’ll smirk with glee at (finally!) pulling off a surprise and inform him that we’re going up to D.C. for the night—don’t worry, honey, I packed a bag for you and hid it in the trunk— to lounge by the pool at a swanky hotel and enjoy a romantic dinner out. Which reminds me—thanks to all of you D.C. peeps who recommended restaurants on Twitter. I’ve narrowed it down to a few great options, and I’ll let you know where we end up going.
It’s going to a hot & sunny day here in the mid-Atlantic region, and I think it will be perfect for a little pool-side laziness and reading. Cross your fingers and send happy thoughts for me and my birthday surprise!
In book-related news, I had a very busy week and didn’t get much reading done. I was only able to post one review, of The Blue Notebook by James Levine, and I’m about 30 pages from the end of The Little Book by Selden Edwards….I’m heading off to finish it in just a few minutes. This week, I also featured a new Adventures in Bookselling post and a literary tour of Richmond for Weekly Geeks.
And oh yeah, I decided to host the BEAtwittyparty—a virtual pity party for those of us who can’t attend BEA—just a few weeks after seeing the error of my ways in deciding that Twitter isn’t entirely useless and annoying. I’m telling you, it’s all because of having wireless internet now. I never wanted to tweet before because it just meant more time up in the office away from the rest of the house, but now that I can do it from the couch while watching TV and hanging with hubby, it’s all good. If you want to join the Twitty Party fun, click here to sign up, and start planning your commisseration!
That’s it for me this morning. I’m off to finish up The Little Book, sneak hubby’s car to the gas station for a quick fill-up, and start working my birthday magic.
What are you up to this Sunday? If you’re in the states, do you have any fun Memorial Day plans? Read any great books this week?

Your sneaky sunday sounds wonderful! I hope you will be sharing the details with us. Well, not ALL the details, but the ones fit for a general audience!
What a wonderful birthday surprise you have planned! I know that both of you will have a glorious time.
Sounds like fun! Be sure to let us know how it goes. I took my husband on a surprise trip for his 50th birthday and he had so much trouble relaxing in the car because I would reveal our destination. I hope you have a fantastic time!
What a great surprise! I hope you two have a wonderful trip.
What fun! Have a great time!
Good luck with your surprise and have a wonderful time!!! Ha, I never realized before that you didn’t have wireless…it all makes so much more sense.
I hope your husband likes the surprises! I’ve been to DC twice and loved it.
I don’t have any real plans for Memorial Day weekend, although I did attend a pig roast yesterday at a farm. That pork was AMAZING! Will your friends at the farm use their own animals too for food? Believe me, that meat will taste so much better than anything from the store!
I hope your surprise goes over well! It sounds like a blast.
I’m not surprised that you didn’t enjoy twitter before you had wireless! It is far more boring to sit at a computer and wait for someone to say something exciting than it is to do something else with your computer nearby.
Enjoy your get away!
Aw, I hope hubby realizes how lucky he is! My wife did EXACTLY the same for me a few years back, right down to puppy boarding, post-lunch misdirection, pre-packed bag and DC-bound. A very nice surprise!
You guys will have such a good time in D.C. Hope it all goes off without a hitch!
I can’t wait to hear all about your trip, and where you ended up eating and staying in DC! What a cute plan!
Great sneaky surprise and I hope you have a great time in DC.
I can’t think of a better place for a getaway.
My weekend has been busy with papers and reading for school, but Monday is my birthday, so I will be celebrating….somehow. LOL
Love how creative and “sneaky” you are!!! He’ll love it and sounds like you’ve got it all covered!! Enjoy!!
