Teaser Tuesdays: Life's That Way

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
- Grab your current read
- Open to a random page
- Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page

Last night, I started Life’s That Way by Jim Beaver, which is a collection of the nightly emails Beaver sent to a growing group of friends and family during the year his wife Cecily was diagnosed with lung cancer. I’m 50 pages in, and I swear, I’ve been on the verge of tears the entire time. This is a very affecting read. Here are my teasers, from page 35:
Cec said the other day that this illness had been a crushing blow to her illusion that she could control the universe. What it has crushed for me is the illusion that I could fix anything I tried to fix. I suppose that both of us are grieving for, among other things, our illusions.
Just pass me the Kleenex now. I’m going to need them.

What a concept for this book. I can see why you need the tissues!! Great teaser!
I read a review of this book (can’t remember where) that had me on the verge of tears. I don’t think its for me, though, as I can hardly stand Hallmark commercials.
Rebecca, you have no idea how much I identify with this teaser. My father was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in Nov. and before he died I went through these same emotions. He was only 67 and had never been sick in his life before he turned 62. I was under the ‘illusion’ that he’d be around for a long time still. Great teaser. I think it will be a while before I will be able to read this one, though.
