The Sunday Salon 4.12.09
2009 at 8pm Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
Whew! After an action-packed weekend focused mostly on food and goofing off with nieces and nephews, I’ve made it back to Richmond and have managed to stay awake long enough for a quick Salon post. Yes, it’s 8:08 pm, and I’m seriously considering getting in the bed soon. Like, within the next 52 minutes. Is that so wrong?
Quick rundown of the weekend: Hubs and I arrived in Raleigh around 8:30 Friday night and grabbed a late dinner with my sister and her fiance and her fiance’s sister and brother-in-law. I used the word “ostensibly” in conversation and everyone, except hubby, looked at me like I was crazy, said they didn’t know what it meant, and proceeded to make fun of me for the rest of dinner. I didn’t really know what to make of it. Is that really an uncommon word? Give me a little perspective, please.
We slept in yesterday morning, grabbed a quick breakfast, and hit the humongous and awesome Raleigh Farmers Market, where we sampled amazing fresh cheeses, homemade salsas, and all kinds of good stuff, and we picked up a few plants for the backyard. I’ll be attempting to grow basil for the third year in a row. If you have any tips, I’d love to hear them. After the farmers market, we headed out for what was, to me, the highlight of the weekend: Steak ‘n Shake! Yep, we made it, and nope, I didn’t get my Steak ‘n Shake-induced nap. But it was still pretty wonderful. And it put me in the perfect mood to spent the rest of the afternoon and evening w/ 2 of hubby’s brothers, their wives, and six nieces & nephews. Pizza was ordered. Fun was had.
We got up bright and early this morning to drive in to Chapel Hill for the Easter brunch with hubby’s family, and boy, was it worth delightful (aside from a minor meltdown related to a certain adorable niece questioning the existence of the Easter Bunny).Breakfast was followed by an Easter egg hunt, cartwheel lessons in the front yard, and some quality hang-out time. All in all, it was a great, if very quick, weekend, and the only downside is that I didn’t get much reading done at all.
A few bloggy highlights from this week:
- Review of A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah (good, but very difficult to read)
- Review of A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick (dark, beautiful, gothic…I could go on.)
- A moment of disgustingness courtesy of the basset hound (she’s fine, thank you to all who left happy thoughts/kind messages.)
- Adventures in Bookselling guest post from my coworker Mark, who contemplates a question we never expected to be asked
This week, I’ll be finishing up The Tricking of Freya, which is really lovely so far, followed by Hold Love Strong and then The Book Thief, which I’ve wanted to read forever but will finally take off of the TBRs, thanks to a helpful nudge from Michael. It’s going to be a crazy week at work, so there’s no telling if I’ll actually get that much reading done, but hey, a girl can dream, right?
How was your weekend? Did you read something you can’t wait to talk about?

Sounds like a wonderful weekend!
I have killed basil for three years in a row. “Ostensibly” it’s easy to grow! I have killed sweet basil, purple basil, lemon basil, and cinnamon basil. I have tried lots of water, not much water, let it dry out, never let it dry out, in the house, out in the garden, under a tree, in a pot. In the end, I figured I’d save money just to buy it at Trader Joe’s whenever I was making something! But it’s very sad. I hope someone else has good tips to offer!
The trick with basil is that you have to pinch off the buds when it starts to flower. If you do that, it will continue to put out leaf after sweet leaf. Trust me! I kill everything but I don’t kill basil!
I’m glad you got your Steak ‘n Shake fix. We don’t have them in Ca. so I can only imagine the greasy goodness.
I didn’t read anything too exciting this weekend, much to my dismay. But hopefully this week will be better!
ditto Ti, make sure you pinch off the buds. water everyday to maintain moist soil and make sure you have it in a spot that gets good sun.
Sounds like they were laughing at you to cover for their embarassment at not knowing what ‘ostensibly’ means!
Looks like you had a great weekend
I’m glad you’re finally getting around to “The Book Thief”. I know there are many adult readers who find it difficult to get into the story, but it’s an excellent book.
Steak ‘n Shake? It sounds dreadfully (or ostensibly) delicious.
