Ah! Such a great read (the post, I mean) please please enter me! Poor feminist college student here.

But yes, I'm always grateful that my own mother talked about my virginity in terms of loving myself. That it wasn't about God or about marriage, she didn't care about that. She said that sex, holy molly, my 15 year old self couldn't believe she said sex, was about my own feelings and that I could get hurt emotionally afterward. She only wanted to make sure that I was making the decision too, not the boy!

I do not agree with this book's stance at all. As a young woman, I want to stay a virgin until married. Yes, my virginity is a gift to my husband, but HIS IS A GIFT TO ME AS WELL. Having sex before you are married can cause emotional and physical problems later on. I want to give my husband all of me and I expect the same standard from him. I don't think it's okay for him to be sleeping around while I wait for him. We both wait for each other. And also, I don't believe that the abstinence movement is forcing women to be in traditional roles. A woman can be successful in the career world and still be a virgin. She doesn't HAVE to get married! Or she can get married and still have a career. It's not like as soon as you get married, you have to have children! You don't have to have children! It's the JOINT decision of the couple. Also, just because someone has sex before they're married does not mean they are not "moral." Yes, in the church we don't agree with it, but WE'RE NOT PERFECT! We know we're not perfect. We do things that we regret but we will always be forgiven, not by people who are also imperfect and have no place to do so, but by God!

Anyways, this is a really interesting topic. It's very interesting to expierence views very different from my own.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I don't think of it as exploiting sexuality. The feminism that I live allows women to express and enjoy their sexuality. This blog is built on what comes out of my brain, and I think there's a lot of quality here. But a woman need not be serious all the time in order to be taken seriously, and I like to show the fun side of my personality as well. Ultimately, isn't the goal of feminism to move our society to a place where women can be whoever and however they want to be without being judged for it? Why can't I be smart and sexy?

I respect where you're coming from, and I know you're certainly not alone, but I disagree.

Hi-- just ran across your very informative and well written review because I was looking up Jessica Valenti - thank you for writing it! In terms of the issues she addresses what struck me was the way that you are using a version of feminine sexuality as part of your own web identity. You are a book reviewer yet you are "panty throwing" and "wild" and have pictures of yourself making sultry eyes at the camera. It's something I might not have thought of except that I had read the review and then scrolled back up to see who you were. Is exploiting our sexuality the only way that we women can be heard these days? If you take these issues seriously I urge you to ask yourself how you are putting yourself out in the world...
