Tacky cards, LOST, and other Sunday randomness

As I mentioned this morning, my hubby and I have an annual Valentine’s Day contest to see which of us can buy the other the tackiest, gaudiest, mushiest, most ridiculous card. Last year, I won in a huge landslide. This year, I foolishly waited until Thursday to hit the Hallmark store and discovered, much to my chagrin, that a good 90% of the “to my husband” cards had already been purchased, but, what do you know, there are still a ton of “to my wife” cards. I found a decent contender, but given that the remaining selection for male buyers was so much greater, I was already a little worried that hubby might beat me.

Then he left me a voicemail telling me that I was “going down this year,” and that the lady in line in front of him when he bought the card remarked, “wow, that’s some card,” and I figured my chances were slim, so I started looking forward to seeing what he came up with. Without further ado, here’s the card I got him (forgive my lazy Sunday photo taking):

The paper is embossed with floral designs, and the lettering in the gold foil (yep, gold foil) says “For my loving husband on Valentine’s Day.” Tacky, but not awful. What is awful, though, is all the poetry inside:

I’ll spare you the horror of recreating it here, but suffice it to say that this is very cheesy poetry. Definitely more for the “we can’t express our feelings verbally, so we buy cards where other people have done it for us” kind of couple. (If you’re into those cards….well, good for you, I suppose.)

After he read and chuckled at his card, acknowledging that any other year, it would have been pretty good, hubby produced a box—not an envelope, people, a box—about 18 x 12 in size. Here’s what was inside:

It’s ginormous, and it’s all about “true lovers” who “have gone through the fire and can testify.” Gotta love it. I laughed for several minutes just trying to read it all. Definitely a winner.  Just for comparison, here are the two cards side by side.

So there you have it. Another Valentine’s Day come and gone.

Now, to answer Amy’s questions from my earlier post…my thoughts on LOST:

  • I really loved that we got to see, at least for a little bit, one of the characters (Jin) experiencing the jumps in time and trying to put the pieces together alone….but I was also happy to hear Sawyer’s voice and to see Jin re-join the group.
  • What is with the temple and the hieroglyphs? I hope they explain that sometime soon.
  • It all makes sense now that we know Charlotte grew up on the island….wonder if we’ll get to see flashbacks of her as child from the memory where she thinks Faraday warned her never to return.
  • Since it’s 3 years later in present time in L.A., should we assume the folks on the island have been juming through time for 3 years now? (I’ve been thinking about this for several episodes.)
  • Was all of this caused by Ben moving the island, when Christian Shephard told Locke he was supposed to do it?

There was a lot more running through my mind, but it’s most time for dinner, so I’ll stop there.

And as for Gossip Girl, well, I found it hopelessly addictive and delightfully entertaining. It is definitely high atop my list of embarrassing guilty pleasures. I love Dan Humphrey, and I love to hate Blair, though she has a few redeeming moments. Amy—I love Chuck Bass. He’s the perfect villain, and I think all of his eccentricities and the tension between his newfound feelings for Blair and his bad boy nature is so fun. Definitely makes me glad I’m not in high school anymore, though.

Haven’t done much reading today since we’ve been catching up on our DVRed shows, so it’s time to grab some grub and return to the couch. I’m sure tomorrow will be a busy day in Book Lady Land, what with schools being out for Presidents’ Day and parents looking to entertain them at the bookstore, so I better chill while I can.
