Teaser Tuesdays: Voluntary Madness
2009 at 8am Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
Hosted by Miz B, TEASER TUESDAYS asks you to:
This week’s teasers are from Voluntary Madness: My Year Lost and Found in the Loony Bin by Norah Vincent, in which the author uses her unique brand of “immersion journalism” and checks herself into various mental health treatment centers to see what life is like on the inside. From page 158:
In the feeble voice of a boy who still wets the bed, he spoke of having nightmares every night, filled with flying “demons and devil dogs,” and he complained of having to leave the light on at night to banish them.
There was Josephine, who stomped around the ward wear a permanent puss face.

What a concept. I don’t think I’d like to check myself into an institution.
wow, what a haunting teaser
Is the author really OK? I mean, who does that voluntarily. But, you/she got my attention.
Wow – doesn’t sound like a light read at all – thanks for the teaser!
Here’s my Teaser! I’m also giving away 15 galley copies of this book via the publisher, so stop by and see if you want to enter!

Not sure what to think about this one. Is she trying to make light of the bad things patients have to go through because she has been in their shoes herself?
Actually (as I’ll eventually discuss in my review), she’s suffered from depression and spent time in a treatment center. Her experience there prompted her to go back while healthy (though she faked symptoms to get in) and do research for the book.
I will definitely check back to read your review. Sounds like a great book. I know mental health in this country stinks, so I am interested to read your thoughts as well as this book.
It sounds interesting. I wonder how differently she saw everything being there as a researcher, having been a patient before.
Takes courage to do that.
I think it might be an emotional read. Good teaser though.
This sounds like the kind of book I’d love….I’m anxious to read your review of this.
