I read "The Help" three times. First was a speed read. I was captured. I read it the second time to savor the many flavors of the book. The third time was for making sure I did not miss anything important. I did not. I called my neice immediately to share. I could only leave a voicemail. I so wanted to talk with someone about this "great" book. I came to the library to ask about blogging. The librarian was helpful and directed me here. When there is no human to share with personally, this is the next best way. Thank you, Kathryn Stockett, for writing a very human and touching book. May you be blessed with writing more.

Loved this book and the movie. I grew up in the South during that era. During reading "The Help", and seeing the movie, I kept saying to myself " Yep. That's just the way it was". We had "help" in the form of a lady who spent 1 day a week at our house ironing our clothing. We kids always ate lunch with "Carrie Lou", our favorite and beloved playmate, much to our mother's chagrin.

Maybe I read more into Skeeter's relationship with Constantine than was there, and I admit that this idea didn't occur to me until after I saw the movie, BUT, did anyone get the inkling, inference, or whatever, that Skeeter might be the white child that Constantine had that eventually led to her dismissal while Skeeter was at Old Miss?

Could that white child be the result of the union of Constantine and Skeeter's father? I mean, they made an issue out of Skeeter's unruly curly hair throughout the book and the movie. The dismissal of Constantine as told by Skeeter's mother in the movie and the book was less than satisfactory or believable. Skeeter's father was a minor accessory character with no personality in the book and the moviet. A father and husband who was not really involved, or emotionally available to his family. The maids' account of why Constantine was sacked, because she had a child who was very light skinned, seemed plausible, and it seems plausible that the father could be Skeeter's father. Do I smell a sequel?

Anybody else think this or am I way off base?

I am assuming that most people watched the movie after having read the book. Did you notice the differences? If you went right after reading you would see a whole bunch. This site has many of the differences listed. Do you know anymore?

The novel is a timely discussion relating to race relations and gender issues prevalent to the Civil Rights Era. Kathryn Stockett shares a story of silent black women with loud voices,
