I picked up a copy of Twilight that my friend's friend had left in my car. Two pages later, I had to put it down in disbelief: I could not believe how awful the writing was! THIS WAS A BESTSELLER!! She CANNOT write. I felt a school kid could do better. The people I know who love it are teenaged girls and older women who love the idea of romance because they have been married a while :). As for Stephen King, I have read many of his books. I used to love his work but sometimes feel that he must be paid by the pound, and I have given up on his recent stuff. The earlier ones were the best (as were the first two collections of short stories). He can write.

The only reason I read the Twilight books is because all of my friends had been going on and on about how amazing they thought the books were. I read them all and was less than impressed.

If you have extra time on your hands and feel like reading a book, go ahead and try them. However I wouldn't expect much. The only reason they have sold as well as they have is because Stephanie Meyer gave teenage girls the chance to fangirl over hot vampire boys and pretend they were Bella.

Overall, the character development is non existant and don't even bother with the fourth book. NOTHING HAPPENS! You spend the entire book expecting a fight that stops right after it starts with no casualties. The only reason the scene is even in there is to show how perfect Bella is.

A lot of people will probably get angry over what I am writing and say that I'm a bad writer; which I know, but I'm not trying to sell people poorly written books.

Stephen King is absolutely correct. Stephanie Meyer can not write.

Okay, I did research for this.

Stephen King's Published Books/Novellas - 82
Stephen King's Film and TV adaptions from his books - 80
King's Books As "Richard Bachman" - 7
King's Unfinished Books/Novellas - 11
King's First Book (limited addition) - People,Places, And Things, 1960 (with Chris Chelsey)
Breakout Novel - Carrie, 1974
Copies Sold - 350 Million

Stephenie Meyer's Published Books/Novellas - 6
Stephenie Meyer's Film and TV adaptations from her books - 5 (including Breaking Dawn 1 and 2)
Meyer's Unfinished Books - 1 (Midnight Sun)
Meyer's First Book - Twilight, 2005
Breakout Novel - Twilight, 2005
Copies Sold - 116 Million

My opinion : King is not jealous. Based on his history and his memoir (On Writing, which I read), he is a strong believer of
constantly sharpening one's "skills" as a writer. He was also an ENGLISH TEACHER (as was JK Rowling) before writing his
first bestseller. Stephenie Meyer's have a lot of repetitive words/ descriptions ( Marble chest, chocolate brown eyes,
crooked smile, CHAGRIN, eyes 'tightened', murmered, smirked, ect). I think angers King. I think he doesn't feel she deserves
the "level" of praise she has gotten, and certainly not to be compared to JK Rowling. Personally, I've noticed since Twilight her
books have a low quality in terms of editing, which is irritating for some people (personally, I want a certain of level of quality in
a product and I really don't like I'm getting that in HER work in particular. Maybe King noticed it,too; how could he not having been an English
teacher? But, who knows...

It's not Meyer who I feel is guilty; I feel it's her editor.

The syntax, grammar, and feel of her books is less than terrible. She put forth a fantastic story; however, her editor must have had some serious restraints in order to allow such a choppy set of books to go to print.

As a rule, if the author has to tell you that someone is beautiful or in love or...anything, then they have taken the easy route and their editor should be fired for not telling them to go back and correct it. A good writer will lead you to those conclusions by showing you the beauty, the love, etc. The rule is simply: show, don't tell.

Related to this is the rule of using the invisible "he/she said", which is linked to the rule of not using too many adjectives and adverbs. Again, the writer should show you the emotions in the scene. If they have to tell you that someone said something "sharply/cheerfully/angrily" then they have failed to paint a picture of that person's mood.

And for anyone who doubts Stephen King's ability, I suggest they read "The Long Walk".

If you think STEPHEN KING IS JEALOUS OF AN AMATEUR like Stephenie meyer, consider this:
Stephen King is a literary legend. He has sold many acclaimed books, has won numerous awards, has sold over 300 + million copies worldwide, has succesful film adaptations from his books, and is a renouned writer/critic to this day.
Stephenie Meyer on the other hand has ONE "hit" series ( at least to the teens and their twi-moms), and that series has only sold, roughly 28 million worldwide. Why would Stephen King be jealous?
It doesn't make sense at all.
Stephenie Meyer needs to grow as a writer, and if you twi-hards/twi-lighters/twi-moms/twi-tards or WHATEVER you call yourself, can't appreciate the fact that she WILL be criticized, she won't get better, and MORE critics will continue to slam her. ( alot already have)
I mean.. At least Stephen King actually CARES enough to read her book and respond to it. That's got to say something right, whether he praises it or not. In my opinion, Stephenie Meyer needs to grow as a writer. Although I personally, don't think she's that great of a writer.
Jk Rowling on the other hand.... PURE BRILLIANCE :)
