The Sunday Salon (on Saturday) 1.31.09
2009 at 10am Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
Since tomorrow will be filled with food and football—well, mainly food and reading between commercials for me—hubby and I have decided to have our Sunday today. We slept in, we’ve had our coffee, and we are ready to commence with the glorious business of actively doing nothing.
You know those State Farm Insurance commercials that air every Sunday during football? Okay, maybe you don’t. I mean, I wouldn’t, either, if I didn’t spend my Sundays reading on the couch while hubby watches football. And okay, maybe you don’t live in the U.S. At any rate, these commercials feature an old Frank Sinatra song all about “feeling kinda Sunday,” and the song has become our weekly anthem. We curl up with delicious mochas made on our fancy home espresso machine (a beautiful result of registering for ridiculously expensive wedding presents we didn’t think anyone would actually buy), and we snuggle under our favorite ugly, grandma-made afghan (they’re better when they’re ugly, right?), and we get into feeling kinda Sunday.
You know, it’s that blissful feeling of knowing you are going to spend the day doing absolutely nothing. When you take a little nap just a few hours after you lazily roll out of bed, and you wake up feeling refreshed and even lazier, you, my friend, are feeling kinda Sunday. It’s only 10:30am here, and I’m already full-swing into Sunday mode, so this should be a good day. And I should (finally) get to finish Cutting for Stone, which is rocking my literary world.
Now for a brief recap of the week here at The Book Lady’s Blog:
It’s been a slow week for book reviews because I haven’t had nearly as much time with Cutting for Stone as I’ve hoped, but I did review Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, which was my favorite fiction read of the month. (See my month-in-review.) I participated in my first Weekly Geeks this week and thoroughly enjoyed the discussion about classic literature, and I enjoyed receiving a few fun blogger awards (here and here) that allowed me to share fun and random facts about myself.
Thursday brought a very lively BTT discussion about the future of publishing and digital media, and it was one of the highlights of my blogging week.
This week I also asked you to help me recommend thrillers for one of my favorite clients to include on a summer reading list for seniors, so if you haven’t participated yet, please hop over and share your ideas. We’ve had some great suggestions so far.
It was a relatively quiet week for me, and I’m really happy to be settling into a quiet day of reading and relaxation. One of my favorite things about Sundays (and the thing that really helps me feel kinda Sunday) is mellow music, and if you’ve been hanging out here very long, then you know I love Counting Crows. This song from the Sunday Mornings side of their newest album Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings is one of my absolute favorites. Enjoy!

What do you do to feel kinda Sunday?

I will most likely watch football tomorrow, but normally I enjoy going to church and then grabbing a huge diet coke and sitting outside with a book…when we have as great of weather as we’ve been having!
You know, reading this made me feel a little sad because I realized I never take time to have a “Sunday” kind of day. Even on my days off I’m hustling and bustling around.
I loved the description of your Sunday – I really have to try this sometime very soon. Like tomorrow??
get all the laundry done first thing in the a.m., get caught up on my correcting papers, start something for dinner in the crockpot and then I have the rest of the day to do whatever!!!
Great post!
I love Sundays, we read books and blogs, watch TV, usually a weeks worth of Ramsey’s kitchen nightmares and then make a roast dinner and collapse back on the sofa!
I love those commercials! It feels like Sunday when I am blog hopping and curled up under a blanket. Have a great week!
