Mid-afternoon pick-me-up!
2009 at 2pm Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
It’s almost Friday, and if you’re anything like me, then you need a little fun to perk you up and get you through the last few hours of the workday. A few fun things for you:
First, I love The Book Design Review. If you haven’t seen it and you love book cover designs, head on over. There’s lots of good stuff. They posted this earlier in the week, and it really made me giggle.
Those are bottle caps, poker chips, and condoms, by the way. And I just love that a book that takes itself so seriously is being turned on its ear by something so irreverent. Can’t necessarily say I’ll be reading this one, but I look forward to seeing it on our shelves and watching customer reactions.
If you thought life was hard for Kermit (because, after all, it’s not easy being green), then take a minute to think about Miss Piggy and all the heartbreak that frog has put her through. She has stood the test of time, and now she’s sharing her wisdom with the masses in this new book.
One of my coworkers picked it up yesterday, and I have to admit, it was pretty cute.
And finally, the funny moment that kicked off my morning: About ten minutes before the store opened, one of our booksellers went over the loudspeaker with the following announcement:
Did anyone lose their chewing gum? There’s an already-chewed piece of bright yellow gum sitting on the customer service desk. Just thought whoever lost it might want it back.
I’m not sure if I can adequately convey how hilarious this was because it helps if you can hear this coworker, who is in his mid-60s and has the most delightful, genteel va-jin-ya accent and a very dry sense of humor.
And in case you’re wondering, the gum was never claimed.
My, it’s an exciting life I lead.

Eeeeewwww….who leaves old gum at someone’s desk for the love of pete????
love the covers!! I need a microphone so I can do that when I find gum left on the bookshelves, on top of books, and under the library tables!!!!
Yes, I’d love to hear about the reactions to that first book.
I’m a sucker for a cool cover. Thanks for posting that site.
The gum story brightened my afternoon too.
