Best. Gift. Ever.

This is my awesome friend Leslie.

Why is Leslie awesome? She was the first person in our neighborhood to befriend Bob and me when we moved in, and over the last couple years, she’s become a close friend, walking buddy, partner in crime, and pretty much invaluable. When Millie got out in the middle of the night a few weeks ago, Leslie answered her phone hen I called at 1:30am and offered to come help us look for her. I love Leslie. And I love her even more because she just gave us this:

Several months ago, Leslie asked me for a few pictures of Millie, and I basically forgot all about it. Imagine my surprise and wonder when I opened the box she brought in and discovered such a cool painting (my mom thought it was a greeting card, but no, it’s a painting, well a graphic painting, about 18 x 20). Leslie’s sister-in-law Larkyn Simony-Choplin is an artist who runs a business called Companion Comics, and she uses photos of your pet to create awesome artwork. You can see the original photo here.
Leslie told Larkyn a story about the time Millie discovered a bunch of baby bunnies in the back yard and proceeded to spend the rest of the day carrying them around, making them scream. (If you’ve ever wondered why dog squeaky toys make the sounds they make, it’s because that sound is very similar to the sound a baby bunny makes when it’s being hauled around by an enthusiastic hound dog.) So, Larkyn adapted the photo to fit the funny story, and now we have a one-of-a-kind way to celebrate our pooch.
Yeah. Best gift ever. No doubt.
NB: No bunnies were harmed. I covered my hands with a towel, rescued each one from her jaws (as soon as I got one, she found another), and delivered them to the safety of a dog-free yard. Of course, she decided to do this while Bob was out of town on business, so I was the bunny saver all by myself.

That’s such a great gift! Kudos to Leslie for something really special and unique!
That’s so cute.
Oh wow. I totally want a friend like Leslie. That’s the coolest present I’ve ever seen!
That is so terrific! I’d love to do something like that for my mom and step-dad. Their dog is getting on in years and something like that would be a great way to remember him after he’s gone.
Oh my gosh! That is beautiful. Leslie is a great friend!
What a thoughtful, unusual gift! Leslie must be a terrific friend.
That’s so great . . . I love it! And you should be celebrated as a saver of bunnies, Rebecca! I don’t think I’ve ever saved any defenseless animals from my dog . . . but I have had the misfortune of throwing my golden retriever off the scent of many a squirrel. He wasn’t happy with me, but I couldn’t let Rudy get away with his squirrel crimes!
What a great and creative gift! I’m bookmarking her sit for gifts for my favorite dog lovers!
I love this painting! I think I already know what I’ll be getting my hard to buy for sister for Christmas next year (and yes, she’s so darn hard to buy for I have to scout things out as much as a year in advance).
