The Sunday Salon
2009 at 3pm Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
Ah, the first Sunday Salon of a new year, and it finds me happily snuggled in my jammies well into the afternoon. Not a bad way to start off the year, if you ask me. I’m feeling extra spoiled this weekend because hubby and I have been celebrating our first wedding anniversary (which is actually tomorrow) with a superdose of laziness and relaxation. We spent Friday night at a local resort, enjoying the peace and quiet and change of pace of being away from the house, had a great dinner at one of their restaurants, and luxuriated under a down comforter in a ginormous, comfy bed. After a quick lunch on the way home yesterday, we snuggled up on the couch and pretty much stayed there for the rest of the day. We slept in this morning and are going about our usual Sunday routine of nothingness, and it feels like a bonus day since yesterday was so relaxing, too. Again, not a bad way to start off the year.
I reviewed two books this week, Who By Fire by Diana Spechler and The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro. I posted my December Reading Wrap-Up and my Year-in-Review, and I celebrated New Year’s Eve with Benjamin Button and french fries at midnight, per my annual tradition with the hubby.
This really has been a week of rest and relaxation, and I’ve been watching a lot of movies. My best friend and I watched The Women on Thursday. It was “meh” but entertaining enough for a lazy afternoon. Hubs and I watched The Happening yesterday. The concept was interesting but a little overwrought, and the acting, oh, the acting…it was, well, pretty horrible. I mean, I love me some Marky Mark, but come on. After that, we wanted something lighter, so hubby convinced me to watch Step Brothers. I tend to enjoy Judd Apatow’s movies, and this fell into the “good, but not great” category. There were some hilarious moments, but it wasn’t nearly as good as, say, The 40-Year-Old Virgin. We’re wrapping up our “dumb funny” movie fest with Baby Mama this afternoon….then I’ll have to go see something serious and thoughtful to make myself feel better
I’m not really one for new year’s resolutions, but I have set a goal to read 100+ books in 2009, and while I love reading ARCs and review copies, I want to do a better job balancing those with books from my personal TBR list. I also want to discover more great blogs, which is why I’ve asked you to recommend your favorites for me, and I hope to get around to updating my blogroll at some point.
This week, I’ll have reviews of The Little Giant of Aberdeen County and Love and Other Natural Disasters and maybe something from the personal TBR list if there is time. A good friend of ours has written a novel, and I started reading the manuscript today. I want to devote as much time to it as it deserves and requires, so whether I’ll fit any other reading in this week remains to be seen.
What are you up to on this first Sunday of the new year?

I watch The Women last night and it’s just “OK”! Today, we went grocery shopping and we are now cooking good stuff. I’m trying to read Vanity Fair written by Thackeray between two receipes since I want to read more classics in 2009. My goal is also to read more than 100 books as I did the last two years… so we’re gonna have to keep going and going…
Can’t wait to see what you think of Little Giant. Happy Anniversary!
Good luck in your goal this year. You can do it. You can always squeeze in some itsy-bitsy ones if time draws short.
Happy Anniversary! I’m in my jammies too, and I’ve been enjoying some classic movies lately.
Have you ever seen the original version of The Women? Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer….one of my favorite movies ever!
I was reading this in my Google Reader and I had to come to the site to recommend the original version of “The Women”. I see that Michele beat me to it!
The original is my favorite movie ever. The snappy 1930s dialogue cannot be improved upon, in my opinion. Rather than the updated version with Meg Ryan, I would like to see the 2001 stage revival with Cynthia Nixon come to DVD. It aired on PBS once for a fundraiser and it was fab!
I didn’t even know there was an original version of the Women…I’ll have to check it out.
Don’t you love being lazy?
I have to go back to work tomorrow.
I joined that 100+ challenge myself. It’s doable. I mean, all books count and if I counted all the books I read, it would be well over 100 for sure.
I didn’t think much of The Women but the original is much better. I also did not care for Baby Mama. I thought the best parts were shown in the trailer.
If you haven’t seen No Reservations with Catherine Zeta Jones, please do so. LOL. I had that movie from Netflix for well over 4 months, no joke and finally sat down to watch it and it was so sweet!
I have to go back to work on Tuesday so I am slowly moving towards my normal routine now.
Sounds like a great weekend. I too spent it more or less relaxing and reading the book ‘Things fall apart’.
I’m just stopping by to let you know that I’ve given your blog an award.
