Since tomorrow will be filled with food and football—well, mainly food and reading between commercials for me—hubby and I have decided to have our Sunday today. We slept in, we’ve had our coffee, and we are ready to commence with the glorious business of actively doing nothing.
You know those State Farm Insurance commercials that air every Sunday during football? Okay, maybe you don’t. I mean, I wouldn’t, either, if I didn’t spend my Sundays reading on the couch while hubby watches football. And okay, maybe you don’t live in the U.S. At any rate, these commercials feature an old Frank Sinatra song all about “feeling kinda Sunday,” and the song has become our weekly anthem. We curl up with delicious mochas made on our fancy home espresso machine (a beautiful result of registering for ridiculously expensive wedding presents we didn’t think anyone would actually buy), and we snuggle under our favorite ugly, grandma-made afghan (they’re better when they’re ugly, right?), and we get into feeling kinda Sunday.
You know, it’s that blissful feeling of knowing you are going to spend the day doing absolutely nothing. When you take a little nap just a few hours after you lazily roll out of bed, and you wake up feeling refreshed and even lazier, you, my friend, are feeling kinda Sunday. It’s only 10:30am here, and I’m already full-swing into Sunday mode, so this should be a good day. And I should (finally) get to finish Cutting for Stone, which is rocking my literary world.
Now for a brief recap of the week here at The Book Lady’s Blog:
It’s been a slow week for book reviews because I haven’t had nearly as much time with Cutting for Stone as I’ve hoped, but I did reviewHotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, which was my favorite fiction read of the month. (See my month-in-review.) I participated in my first Weekly Geeks this week and thoroughly enjoyed the discussion about classic literature, and I enjoyed receiving a few fun blogger awards (here and here) that allowed me to share fun and random facts about myself.
Thursday brought a very lively BTT discussion about the future of publishing and digital media, and it was one of the highlights of my blogging week.
This week I also asked you to help me recommend thrillers for one of my favorite clients to include on a summer reading list for seniors, so if you haven’t participated yet, please hop over and share your ideas. We’ve had some great suggestions so far.
It was a relatively quiet week for me, and I’m really happy to be settling into a quiet day of reading and relaxation. One of my favorite things about Sundays (and the thing that really helps me feel kinda Sunday) is mellow music, and if you’ve been hanging out here very long, then you know I love Counting Crows. This song from the Sunday Mornings side of their newest album Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings is one of my absolute favorites. Enjoy!
Rebecca at Lost in Books tagged me for this fabulous award. So cute! Thanks, Rebecca.
Now I’m supposed to list 5 things I’m addicted to and pass the award onto 5 other bloggers.
It was hard to narrow this down, but here are my 5 addictions:
My red reading glasses. Can’t live without ‘em!
Peppermint mochas
Wednesday night yoga classes with Jay the superhot semi-Rastafarian yoga man. I *heart* him.
Pajamas all day on Sundays
Cuddling up with my hubby and our pooch for a family nap on the couch.
I was going to list reading, but I figured that’s a given
Since I’ve been doing a lot of awarding/tagging lately, I’m going to skip the tags and invite you all to jump in, declare yourselves fabulous, and share some addictions with the rest of us.
Well, I was hoping to get the year kicked off with a slightly more productive reading month, but evenings and weekends have been busier than usual, and that really cuts into my reading time. I’ve read and reviewed 7 books this month, and I was hoping to have Cutting for Stone finished by now, but seeing as how January ends tomorrow, I think it’s fair to say that that’s not going to happen. The end of this month has really snuck up on me, and I’m looking forward to a weekend heavy on the reading and light on pretty much everything else.
So, here’s what I read this month.
It’s pretty easy to pick favorites this month. For fiction, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet is the clear winner, and for nonfiction, I have to go with Reading the OED. A few of the others were pretty good, but I wouldn’t exactly call this a great reading month. Definitely not the best I’ve had.
How was your reading this month? Any new favorites?
Kamil asked me to let you know that the folks at Cameesa were so thrilled with the interest in my Take Me To Your Reader t-shirt giveaway from a few weeks ago that they’ve decided to run a one-day sale (today only, kids) offering the shirt for $12.99. So if you were bummed that you didn’t win it, today’s your day. Click the photo below to head over and order one.
Happy Friday! What are your plans for the weekend?
It’s almost Friday, and if you’re anything like me, then you need a little fun to perk you up and get you through the last few hours of the workday. A few fun things for you:
First, I love The Book Design Review. If you haven’t seen it and you love book cover designs, head on over. There’s lots of good stuff. They posted this earlier in the week, and it really made me giggle.
Those are bottle caps, poker chips, and condoms, by the way. And I just love that a book that takes itself so seriously is being turned on its ear by something so irreverent. Can’t necessarily say I’ll be reading this one, but I look forward to seeing it on our shelves and watching customer reactions.
If you thought life was hard for Kermit (because, after all, it’s not easy being green), then take a minute to think about Miss Piggy and all the heartbreak that frog has put her through. She has stood the test of time, and now she’s sharing her wisdom with the masses in this new book.
One of my coworkers picked it up yesterday, and I have to admit, it was pretty cute.
And finally, the funny moment that kicked off my morning: About ten minutes before the store opened, one of our booksellers went over the loudspeaker with the following announcement:
Did anyone lose their chewing gum? There’s an already-chewed piece of bright yellow gum sitting on the customer service desk. Just thought whoever lost it might want it back.
I’m not sure if I can adequately convey how hilarious this was because it helps if you can hear this coworker, who is in his mid-60s and has the most delightful, genteel va-jin-ya accent and a very dry sense of humor.
And in case you’re wondering, the gum was never claimed.
