Meme-ing with The Book Lady
2008 at 10am Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
Okay, got through the morning rush, and I have a few minutes to catch up on memes I’ve been tagged for recently. Meg asked me to share 6 random things about myself. I did this once before, but I have enough quirks to keep on going. So here we go:
1. Spur of the moment, I make up my own words to popular songs and craft them to fit whatever I’m doing at the time. Recently, I converted Jay-Z’s “You better get that dirt off your shoulder” into “You better get that dirt off your diggers” when my dog came in the house covered in dirt from her most recent bone excavation mission.
2. I love to wear pajamas around the house, but I rarely sleep in them (wink wink).
3. I think the people on the elliptical machines next to me at the gym would be surprised if they knew the nice little short girl next to them was rocking out to Rage Against the Machine. (“Down Rodeo” is one of my all-time favorites)
4. I have a weakness for old-school Bon Jovi and can’t hear “Livin’ On A Prayer” without rolling the windows down, cranking the music, and singing at the top of my lungs.
5.I’m thinking about starting to work on writing a book. But I’m scared.
6. I went through a religious phase in high school during which I learned a lot of contemporary Christian music. I don’t go to church now (more out of apathy, laziness, being in my mid-20s and enjoying sleeping in, than out of any serious change of heart), but I still remember the songs, and every now and then, one gets stuck in my head, and I end up belting it out while driving, showering, cooking dinner, etc. That guarantees a weird look from the hubby, who grew up Catholic and is pretty sure that anything that’s not in the hymnal is just plain weird. My two best girlfriends (who started college as a graphic design major and a math major, respectively) are both pastors now, and hubs is just waiting for me to get the bug, too. But I’m pretty sure that’s not how it works.

Amy tagged me for this Books for the Holidays meme created by Harriet.
What books are you giving this Christmas? Well, given that I get a pretty sweet discount this time of year, a good portion of the gifts I’m giving are books. I won’t reveal all of them (many are from this list), but I’ll tell you that this is the cutest thing I’m giving:

What makes a book a good gift? A book is a good gift if 1) it’s a good book; 2) it fits the interests of the person you’re giving it to; or 3) it introduces the receiver to something new and interesting that you’re pretty sure they will like.
Do you give the same books to a lot of people or pick out books individually? I do a little of both. A couple people on my list this year are getting The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society because it’s a great book and a good fit for just about anyone. Normally, I choose books individually based on what I know about the person’s taste and interests. With customers, though, I usually work from a pretty standard set of broad recommendations.
Do you always give books you’ve read yourself, or are there occasions when you give something you haven’t read? I prefer to give books I’ve read myself so that I can vouch for the content and quality and then talk to the person about the book when they finish it. That’s one of the best parts! But I do give books I haven’t read, particularly if I’m shopping for someone whose reading preferences are really different from my own.
That’s it! I’m not going to tag anyone specifically, but please play along if you feel like it!

rage against the machine…rules!
Bon Jovi is one of my ultimate faves.
I usually insert my dog’s name into songs…lol
Start working on the book! It is scary, but it can be so exhilerating, too!
Which contemporary CHristian music?
That could be a fun discussion!
Amy–I should actually said that I remember fractions of the songs, and now that you ask, I can’t remember any of the official titles….but I’ll let you know the next time it happens.
No one believes what is on my iPod half the time. Bon Jovi? Livin’ On a Prayer? LOVE it! Reminds me of a much younger self. LOL.
Write a book! Go for it. You’re such a good writer, I know it would be fabulous and all us bloggers would buy a copy!
