Voluntary simplicity (Phraseology, day 22)
2008 at 11am Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
My Phraseology fest is winding to a close, and the chapters for these last letters are pretty short. That works out well for me because it’s Monday, I’m pretty busy, and I’m still not awake enough to be very clever. And I’m totally distracted by the fact that the first thing I saw when I walked in this morning was the cover of US Weekly declaring that Heidi & Spencer (from MTV’s The Hills) eloped. Egads! Could there be a worse idea?
Anyway…..
The vanishing line is the intersection of the parallel of any original plane and picture, one of the lines converging to the vanishing point, which, in a drawing, is when parallel lines show perspective, converging at a point on the horizon. Here’s a nice illustration:

Tomatoes and melons are actually vegetable fruits.
In Venice, Venetian blinds—which were invented in Japan—are known as Persian blinds.
I have a tendency to talk a lot when I get really excited about something. Some people refer to this as verbal diarrhea, but it’s also called logorrhea.
Vitamin R is a nickname for Ritalin, and Vitamin V for Viagra. I can’t say I’ve ever heard that used, and after watching the whole first season of True Blood, V has a different connotation for me, but whatever. Viva Viagra!
With all of the busy-ness of the holidays, I’m always looking for ways to slow down and remember what’s really important. Voluntary simplicity—a lifestyle that is less pressured due to a focus away from accumulation of goods and more toward nonmaterials aspects of life—is sounding really good right now. It’s also known as downshifting.
And now for one that has driven me crazy for a very long time:
Grammatically, it should be Veterans’ Day with a possessive apostrophe (i.e., a day for or belonging to veterans), but you often find this holiday spelled without the apostrophe. What does it say on your calendar?
Hope you’re all having a fantastic—or at least bearable—Monday. I’m looking forward to heading home this afternoon to finish The Time Traveler’s Wife, which I am really loving so far.

The whole Speidi ordeal smells of a serious publicity hoax to me! But isn’t their entire relationship a publicity stunt? Why do we even know who they are, anyway?!?
Ahem.
Sorry. They get under my skin for some reason! And this is totally unrelated to your great phraseology post! Perhaps I have logorrhea myself?
Meg, I couldn’t agree more. I think the whole thing wreaks of publicity hoax….but I must admit that I watch The Hills and have seen Spencer’s manipulation, and it’s kind of amazing. I’m really not surprised.
Good lord! Did Heidi & Spencer really elope? (BTW–I have no idea who they are). Should I feel bad about this?
I’m going to miss phraseology. Can’t you start over again?
Char, not only should you not feel bad, you should feel very good…and I should be very embarrassed that I not only know who they are but actually watch the show on a weekly basis. It’s a train wreck. What can I say?
And I’m going to miss Phraseology, too….we can hope Ms. Kipfer will write another fun book soon.
