Booking Through Thankfulness

btt2I missed this question yesterday because I was caught in a flurry of Christmas music and cooking, but I want to participate anyway.  This week’s topic:

Today (actually yesterday) is Thanksgiving here in the U.S.

Now, you may have noticed that the global economy isn’t exactly doing well. There’s war. Starvation. All sorts of bad, scary things going on.

So–just for today–how about sharing 7 things that you’re thankful for?

This can be about books, sure–authors you appreciate, books you love, an ode to your public library–but also, how about other things, too? Because in times like these, with bills piling up and disaster seemingly lurking around every corner, it’s more important than ever to stop and take stock of the things we’re grateful for. Family. Friends. Good health (I hope). Coffee and tea. Turkey. Sunshine. Wagging tails. Curling up with a good book.

So, how about it? Spread a little positive thinking and tell the world what there is to be thankful for.

I have so much to be thankful for, and I tend to get all smushy and emotional around the holidays because I’m reminded of it so frequently. Here are just 7 out of the bazillion things I’m grateful for.

1. My family—My parents have been together for almost forty years (since they were 15), and they are still very clearly in love with each other. They’re kind and funny and incredibly supportive, and after some difficult times this year, I’m especially glad that they’re both still here with us. My little sister (who just got engaged yesterday!) is my best friend and is hands-down the funniest person I know. She never fails to make me laugh until I cry, and she’s just a delight to be around. I’m so proud to be her big sister, and I’m thankful that she’s chosen such a wonderful man to spend her life with…so I’m also thankful for Tim, my brother-to-be.

2. My husband—Bonded by mutual weirdness, we’ve pledged to spend our lives loving, supporting, and annoying the hell out of each other. Bob always knows how to make me smile, and he has this wonderful way of doing sweet things at the most unexpected moments. He truly exemplifies that old adage about friends (and hubbies) being the people who know you as you really are and love you anyway. He’s a great snuggler, a fun traveling buddy, and the best road trip partner I’ve ever met.  He does a hilarious Eddie Vedder impression, and he makes a killer grilled cheese sandwich. What more could a girl want?

3. Millie (our basset hound)—There’s nothing better than coming home in the evening to a pair of droopy eyes surrounded by floppy ears and finished off with a rapidly wagging tail. The best snuggler around, this pooch keeps me warm and cozy on the couch, naps with me on Sunday afternoons, and reminds me every day that I’m glad to be her mom.

4. Good friends—Bob and I have a very tight group of friends that has been together since the beginning of our freshman year of college (7 1/2 years now). Anna, Joe, Paul, and Heather are our family. They’ve watched us grow as a couple, they’ve celebrated our engagement and stood beside us during our wedding, and they have supported us through the most trying times of our adult lives. I’m happy to say we’ve been able to do the same for them. They’re always willing to sit up talking late into the night, to share a casual meal, and to sit in silence together and just be. They’re the best friends two people could ask for, and I’m so thankful for them.

5. Literacy—So much of my life revolves around books—I work in a bookstore, I write this blog, and I spend a ton of my personal time reading. I’m reminded every day how fortunate I am to have had the education I’ve had and to be able to read. I’m thankful for being surrounded by people who share and understand my passion for reading.

6. Snuggly nieces and nephews—I spent most of yesterday cuddled up with one kid or another, as six of my seven nieces and nephews were present for our Thanksgiving celebration. There’s nothing like walking into a house and being surrounded by little bodies who are all thrilled to see you. They read books to me and let me read to them; they share their ice cream, their tears, and their funny school stories; and they give the best hugs ever. I’m incredibly thankful to be their aunt (even though I’m glad I get to go home at the end of the night, enjoying all of the fun but none of the responsibility).

7. Music—My parents made sure that my childhood was filled with music of all kinds, and that led to a deep passion and appreciation that I’m sure will be life-long. I love that all of the best moments of my life have happened with great music in the background, and that I’ll get to spend the rest of my days being reminded of those moments when the opening chords play. I cook with music on, read with music on, work out with music on, and I love almost nothing more than driving with the windows down and music blasting on a perfect fall day.
