Wally Lamb is a bit full of himself. The reference to 'jacking' off is juvenile and crass; not at all necessary except to the author who may well have used a box of Cheeze Its to gratify himself. Wow. The political references to 'Dubya' and 'Darth Vadar' border on petulance and have no relevance to the story except to subject the reader to his liberalism at the expense of the tragedy at Columbine; and he spent nine years writing it?
How pathetic.

This book started out great. But it got terrible! Why not just focus on Colombine? That part of the story was so good! But then there was all this extra material: moving, Katrina victims, prison, murder, historical events, etc. There was WAY too much going on. I started to skim some of the extraneous material just to get back to the actual story. But alas, a little over halfway through and I'm giving up. What a waste.

i'm sorry but i really have to totally disagree with you on this one this book in my opinion was beautiful i haven't reached the end yet but am almost there and totally impressed. i think that this book is so realistic and something someone can really relate to, i loved the way he used so many real life events in this novel and that the only fiction were the characters themselves and their lives and not the world around them. i loved the way lamb brought so much of caelum's family history into the novel and the revelation of their secrets as he does with all his work and i especially loved when he brought dominic and parts of his life into this story. what i loved the most about this novel is how close it is most people's life experiences and i think that it was very artistic that he didn't dwell on the columbine shooting only but with the real events surrounding someone who is trying to find themselves. i think you all missed what lamb was trying to do with this one. think about it don't you think it would have been bland if he just focused on the columbine and not other event that would have been taking place in a real persons life. i think this book was too real for most persons to appreciate and not like the usual fictions. Wally Lamb continues to impress me with his work and is still one of my favourite authors of all times

I agree - it was engaging writing but it became a soap opera - overly melodramatic. I mean how many bad things can one person pack into a novel? I think the book would have been better if it just focussed on Maureen and Caleum in the after-math of the Columbine shootings.

I know this much is true is my most favorite book ever!! I am saddened to hear someone say that "the first hour I believed" would be their first and last book of Wally Lamb's.

I agree entirely with the review of The first hour... but I definitely need to emphasize how beautiful and dark I know this much is true was. I strongly recommend it.

I totally agree with you. I was getting so confused with Lydia's family and all the details. Ugh!
