The Monday Salon
2008 at 10am Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
Well, I didn’t quite make it around to writing a Salon post yesterday because my glorious weekend of laziness compelled me to stay on the couch in my jammies, but I know some of you wanted to know how the 48 hours of “going dark” went. Here’s a recap.
Friday night, we hit the grocery store and Blockbuster to stock up on provisions, videos, and last-minute candy for trick-or-treaters. We filled our cart with delicious goodies and an embarrassing amount of unhealthy splurge foods, then we picked up a pizza and headed home. We only had 15 or 20 trick-or-treaters, so we snacked on the mini-Snickers and Reese’s cups and waited for our nieces and nephew to come by and show off their costumes. After a quick visit, they left at 9:30 and we changed into jammies and settled in to our favorite spots on the couch to watch a few episodes of 30 Rock, season 2.
Bob let me sleep in Saturday until noon (soooo wonderful), and we baked croissants for “breakfast” at 12:30. We then watched several more hours of 30 Rock, snacking on chips and dip, fruit slices (the one healthy snack of the weekend), Ben & Jerry’s, and french fries in between. Then we made Rice Krispie Treats for dinner. That’s right folks, we had cereal with butter and marshmallows for dinner, and it was fantastic. And we ordered Chinese. Awww yeah.
Then it was back to the couch for a viewing of Feast, campy horror film that was made during Project Greenlight a few years ago. We watched the whole season when they made it, but we never got around to renting the movie. It was scary and gross and actually pretty good for what it was. And it had Judah Friedlander, so what’s not to love?
After a late-night snack of more Rice Krispie Treats, a cup of hot cinnamon tea for me and the millionth Dr. Pepper of the day for Bob, we rolled the clocks back and rolled ourselves to bed. Day One of Fall Back Weekend was over, and we were happy with things thus far.
I woke up yesterday morning at 8am (thrilled that it really felt like 9am) and snuggled with the pooch while I watched Maya Angelou on BookTV, which I had TiVo’d the night before. She was wise and gracious and utterly phenomenal, and it was a good start to the day. Millie woke Bob up at 9:30, and we headed off to Denny’s for our traditional Fall Back Weekend greasy breakfast. And a greasy breakfast it was. Did you know you can build your own Grand Slam for only $5.99? What a great way to continue a weekend of gluttony.

After breakfast, we got right back into our jammies and watched a few more episodes of 30 Rock. Then, it was time for Bob to set his fantasy football rosters, so I did a little reading and quickly fell into a nap. I woke up to make nachos for lunch (more Rice Krispie Treats for dessert), read a few posts from the Google Reader, and resumed my spot on the couch. Where I then took another nap for about an hour. (Jealous yet? I told you it was a weekend of sheer relaxation.)
I woke up mid-afternoon and did a little more reading, then we snacked on leftover Chinese food, finished the first disc of 30 Rock (that’s 10 episodes, folks), ate Doritos and ice cream for “dinner” and watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which was funny and ridiculous and exactly what the weekend called for. Bob watched a little more football, and I read a few more chapters, then we called it a night.
All in all, our “off the grid” Fall Back Weekend was a huge success. We stayed in our pajamas and never left the house except to go to breakfast on Sunday, and we indulged in all the unhealthy food our little hearts desired. We napped and lounged and did nothing productive, and it was perfect.
I did manage to finish A Mercy and get a few hundred pages into In the Land of Invisible Women, and I’ll be talking about those more later this week. I was sad to wake up to an alarm clock this morning, turn the phones back on, and head in to work, but I’m feeling refreshed and relaxed, and I’m thinking “off the grid” weekend may need to happen once a quarter instead of once a year. If you’ve never done something like that, I highly recommend it, especially for reconnecting with your partner/significant other and shutting out the outside world.
What were you up to this weekend?

That sounds like a fantastic weekend! It makes me want to eat junk food.
Thanks for sharing that wonderful weekend with us! I’ll have to wait until the kids are in their teens before I try it though.
I lauged at all the food you had in between your non-activity. Chinese food and rice crispy treats are an odd combination but surprisingly tempting.
“After breakfast we got right back into our jammies”! That is so cool. I want rice krispie squares right now you realize. Glad it was fun.
Sunday felt like the longest day of my life, with the time change and rain.
Rice Crispy Treats for dinner! I love it! Sounds like a wonderful way to reconnect. What a great tradition.
