BTT: Fall into Reading
2008 at 10am Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
Autumn is starting (here in the US, anyway), and kids are heading back to school–does the changing season change your reading habits? Less time? More? Are you just in the mood for different kinds of books than you were over the summer?
My reading habits don’t change very much with the seasons. I tend to travel a lot during the summer and around the holidays, so my reading time increases accordingly, but I can’t say my reading preferences vary by season. I am more likely to commit to a lengthy tome during the winter, when once I get snuggled into my favorite quilt on the couch, I’ll never want to get up, but that’s really the only change. I read Anna Karenina on a ski trip a few years ago, and I can’t think of a more perfect way to experience that book than curled up by a fire on a snowy day.
I love everything about autumn—the crisp, cool mornings, the return of Pumpkin Spice lattes, being able to drive with the windows down and the sunroof open, and taking long walks with my hubby and our pooch. Something about this season always makes me feel that all is well with my soul; it makes me very content and peaceful and ready to give myself over to a good book at the drop of a hat.
While I grab my reading time in bits and pieces during the warmer months, I tend to hunker down during fall and winter and take longer reading periods each day. Weekends become especially productive thanks to the co-occurrence of baseball and football seasons—I can’t even begin to fathom how many books I’ve read with baseball or football on in the background in the seven years I’ve been with Bob—and I find myself more willing to make excuses not to leave the house so I can keep reading. It’s even worse (better?) if my dog snuggles up to me while I’m lying on the couch…that warm basset hound body and her oh-so-adorable face make it nearly impossible to get up, especially if I decide to just nap with her.
So maybe my reading habits change more than I thought they did.
Still, I don’t read different types of books during different seasons, at least not intentionally.

What are your reading plans this fall? Any books you’re particularly excited about? Me? I can’t wait to start the new Toni Morrison (I have an ARC, so it won’t be long now)!

Very well said. Now you have me racing to the pantry for some spiced tea!
Well, this fall I’m looking forward to the new P.D. James mystery. Supposed to be out in November, I think. I’m a big Adam Dalgliesh fan.
It is well with my soul is my favorite hymn; you made me think of it.
My reading plans for this fall is my TBR pile. The one I’m most looking forward to is Angela Hunt’s newest “She’s in A Better Place.” It’s the third in her trilogy.
I have so many books I haven’t read sitting on the bookshelves. So I’ve promised myself I will get off the computer when it’s too cold in the garden and hunker down to read some of them.

I’m in California so Fall here is more an “idea” than a reality. However, I look forward to it every year and it is by far my favorite season.
My reading styles do change during this time of the year in that I spend more time cozying up with a good book but I don’t have any particular book or series that I am looking forward to reading.
I hear ya on the sports reading. I miss soccer only for that reason. I used to sit there for all of those practices and catch-up but now my kid is in community theatre and it’s not as easy to read in a dark theatre. LOL.
I’d forgotten how having sport on the TV can provide the perfect Autumn/Winter excuse for sneaking off and reading more of a book! I’m going to see Toni Morrison talk at the end of next month but as that’s on the same day as the book is released, perhaps I’ll just have to settle for hearing about itbefore I read it! I’ll be interested to see what you think.
Peta: I saw her speak when I was in college, and it was phenomenal. She’s such a presence–I’m jealous! I’ll probably be posting my review in advance of the publication date, so you can get a sneak peek here.
Sometimes I wish my husband watched more sports – more time for me to read!
Ah, fall…the season that ushers in the rain for us in the great Pacific Northwest (rain that will continue, more or less, for the next six months). And I absolutely love, love, love it. After being exiled in south Texas for the past four years, I love the coolness, the dampness, the excuse to have the fireplace just roaring.
And now that you mention it, my reading habits do indeed change with the weather/seasons. I find myself reading more Dickens around Christmas and for some reason the mystery novels become more attractive. Of course, historical fiction is good anytime of year and for that I am grateful!
I had never thought about that before hehehe I have a very long list of books to read and I pick them according to my mood
I read Anna Karenina last winter, I knew I would have a lot of free time at home and I thought would be a great book for those “lazy/cold” moments… and it was indeed =D
By the way, what were your feelings toward Anna in the end??? hehehe I loved her, I hated her and I wished the book had never ended!
I do find myself thinking about “darker” books in the fall/winter — I guess just more serious books. I’m a huge fan of chick lit and pour through it all year long, but I’ve been putting some things on the backburner as I gear up for some Jodi Picoult or Diana Gabaldon. We’ll see where the fall takes us!
Your response mirrors all my own feelings just perfectly! I, too, love settling in to read after a long walk on a cool evening.
I’ve been getting up early even on these darker mornings, just to cuddle up with the puppies and my coffee and have some extra reading time.
I haven’t any particular reading agenda this fall, although I do have a lot of new books on my stack.
A Pumpkin Spice latte and a good book sounds like heaven to me. Fall has always been my favorite season, it’s like a balm to my soul after the hectic days of summer vacations. I don’t think my reading habits change too much with the seasons though — I’m one of those who will read just about anything I can get my hands on. If I had to pinpoint one thing I’d say my fall reading tends toward more emotional reads like my current one — Recovering Charles — which is a touching tale of faith, hope, and recovery in post-Katrina New Orleans.
