Daylight Fading
2008 at 3pm Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
We’re having our first perfect almost-fall day here in Richmond. It was 65 and sunny when I left for lunch a few hours ago, and I can’t tell you how happy that makes me. This season tends to make me mellow and contemplative, and it always reminds me of the song “Daylight Fading” by Counting Crows. It’s a loose association but one that makes me smile at countless memories of driving with the windows down, the sunroof open, and the music turned all the way up.
And this afternoon, as I’m antsy for a variety of reasons, I’m embodying this most perfect of opening lines:
Waiting for the moon to come and light me up inside,
I am waiting for the telephone to tell me I’m alive.
Know the feeling?
What song or CD makes you ready to spend an afternoon in a place like this?

Ooh, beautiful! Fall is my favorite season. It’s still summer here in Oregon, usually until early October (It’s been upper 80′s to lower 90′s all week), then it starts to rain. I miss fall in the midwest, that crisp dry leaves smell. The song that comes to mind every year is U2s October. Here’s the entire song:
October and the trees are stripped bare of all they wear
What do I care?
October and kingdoms rise and kingdoms fall
But you go on . . . and on.
Fall always pushes me into Ingrid Michaelson’s music. I absolutely adore her, and her song “The Hat” reminds me so much of the changing of the seasons . . . I don’t know why. Her songs are just uplifting, melodious and sad — all at the same time. Sort of like fall!
I’m all about John Mayer, too, and his song “Stop This Train” is a quintessential autumn tune for me.
Meg: I haven’t heard much of John Mayer’s more recent music, but I’m still in love with a couple songs from Room for Squares. I love “St. Patrick’s Day” for snuggly winter evenings.
