Guilty Pleasures: Summer TV, v.2.0…and Wedding Photos!

So, I’ve been reading The Sex Lives of Cannibals since Saturday.  At only 272 pages, I should have finished it by now.  Really.  But its failure to hold my attention (more on that in my upcoming review), combined with my abiding love for the oh-so-perfect diversions of summer TV programming, means that I’ve been spending more quality time with my TiVo than with J. Maarten Troost. I should feel guilty.  But I don’t, and here’s why:

1. MTV’s “The Hills”: Who knew life could be so difficult for rich Orange County twenty-somethings who live in L.A. apartments so swanky that most successful adults couldn’t afford them and who seem to magically snag high-profile jobs without even trying?  The turbulent friendships, constant relationship turmoil (thank you, Heidi and Spencer), interesting wardrobe selections, and the pretense that this is “real” life make The Hills one of the highlights of my week.  I have a season pass, and I’m not afraid to admit it.

2. ABC’s “High School Musical: Get in the Picture”:  I have seven nieces and nephews under the age of ten, so I’ve seen the High School Musical movies more times than I can count.  I’ve even enjoyed them on movie & ice cream nights with the girls because they’re just so bad that they’re good. I feel the same way about this reality show competition.  The kids are so earnest, so melodramatic, and so, well, so teenage. Each week, the finalists (they’re called students on the show) perform a song & dance routine for the judges (the ”faculty), and two are sent to the chorus while the rest remain in contention for a lead role in an upcoming music video. To top it off, Nick Lachey (cheesy host extraordinaire) makes the student selected as the top performer read off the names of those selected to continue on, a la Tyra Banks on America’s Next Top Model.  The show is truly awful, and I just can’t help myself.

3. TLC’s “Rock the Reception”: Take two already anxious soon-to-be-wed couples, add the stress and time crunch of learning a choreographed first dance for the reception in less than a week, and you have a great recipe for funny, entertaining, entirely mindless summer TV.  It’s even better when one (or both) of the people is less than coordinated.  Bob and I decided to go the funky route and make our grand entrance into our reception to The Blues Brothers’ “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love,” and it was awesome, but “Rock the Reception” makes me wish we’d gone all out with a crazy dance.

Here we are, descending the staircase of the Grand Reading Room at the Kansas City Public Library (January 5, 2008):

A little kissy action:

My parents even got in on the action when they gave their toast:

Even without a crazy first dance, we were pretty funky…Here are a few of my favorite portraits from the evening. The poor taxi driver thought we were crazy.

We met some interesting folks while we took this one at a nearby bus stop:

We don’t normally look nearly this cool.  Special thanks to our amazing photographer, Kelley Walker Chance of Kelley Photo and Design.  She’s based in Kansas City but is available for travel worldwide.  I heart her. Click here to check out her blog. It just doesn’t get any better than Kelley’s unique mix of fashion photography, fine art, and photojournalism. And, oh yeah, she’s only 23!

So there you have it…3 more guilty pleasures of summer.  What are you watching?
