Sunday Salon: July Reading Wrap-Up
2008 at 10am Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
Okay, so we’re already a few days into August, but the end of July was crazy, and there was simply no time for a summary post. As the week drew to a close, plans and preparations for the midnight release party in celebration of Breaking Dawn kicked into high gear, and it also happened to be the week that my brother- and sister-in law moved here to Richmond with their three kids (yay for nieces & nephew right here in town!) to start a new chapter of their lives. Both events–the party and the move–went as smoothly as we hoped they would, and I didn’t mind too much that I my reading time had been pretty limited.
It’s hard to believe that I’ve only been blogging for a month. I’ve never really kept track of my reading before. I always had a decent idea of how much and how quickly I was reading, based on the rate at which the TBR pile depleted, but this is the first time I’ve tracked my reading and written reviews for everything I’ve read, so I’m quite pleased to discover that I read ten books in July. Woo! If not for pesky Breaking Dawn, I would have finished my current read, Months and Seasons, which is on hold while I plow through my final obligatory jaunt into the world of Stephenie Meyer.
So, here’s what I read this month. Click on the cover to read my review:
It’s difficult to pick favorites because I really enjoyed most of these selections. The Gargoyle, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and The Lace Reader all left lasting impressions, but The Glass Castle and Love Is a Mix Tape were very pretty unforgettable as well. August is going to be a month heavy in ARCs, so I’m hoping it will be as good a month for reading as July is, but this is going to be a tough one to beat.
Now, before I return to Edward and Bella and their increasingly ridiculous plight (my apologies to all you Twilight fans–I just can’t handle it), a quick poll to help me decide whether or not I should post a review of Breaking Dawn when I finish it in the next couple days. Just click the response you choose:

Happy Sunday!

I read ‘Twilight’ and then decided that as far as Edward and Bella were concerned I really didn’t care. Is there something wrong with me?
Ann: There’s nothing wrong with you! I don’t care for the Twilight books either, but I’ve had to read them for work.
I haven’t even tried the Twilight series. For whatever reason, they don’t appeal to me right now. I’m glad that I’m not alone in that. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and The Lace Reader are on my TBR list, though. I can’t wait!
I’m planning to read Twilight this coming week. I like your poll, I’ve bookmarked it.
I love your polls! I voted for you to spill the dirt! I loved The Glass Castle too, I read it a year ago or so, but it stuck with me.
I just recently read Twilight, mostly to see what the kerfuffle was about. Didn’t do much for me, I think I’m too old to appreciate that much teen angst and unrequited love stuff. I think my 13 year old daughter might love them, except she’s not big on vampire lore. (I usually love vampire stories, just not so much this one)
I simply do not like twilight books!

[...] pretty good reading. I wasn’t as crazy about as many of my reads this month as I was in July, but all in all, I’m happy with how August turned out. Here’s what I read and [...]
