Tuesday Thingers: Summer Plans
2008 at 3pm Posted by Rebecca Joines Schinsky
Since we’re past the Fourth of July and the summer season has officially started, what are your plans for the summer? Vacations, trips? Trips that involve reading? Reading plans? If you’re going somewhere, do you do any reading to prepare? Do you read local literature as part of your trip? Have you thought about using the LT Local feature to help plan your book-buying?
Most of my summer trips are already over. I just returned from a long weekend in St. Louis where Bob and I visited his parents, ate at some of our favorite restaurants, saw fireworks at The Arch, and took in a Cardinals vs. Cubs game at the new Busch Stadium. Last weekend, we were in Raleigh and Chapel Hill, NC visiting family, and the weekend before that I was in New York City for girls’ weekend with my best friend. As far as I know, I’ll be here in Richmond for the rest of the summer before I head to Kansas City to visit my parents and attend a friend’s wedding over Labor Day weekend.
All of my trips (summer and otherwise) involve reading. I take whatever book I’m currently reading on the plane, and I’m always sure to pack three or four extras to enjoy during my trip and on my return flight. Lately, I’ve had some great books to read, and I’ve had the good luck to finish them right as my plane touches down at home. I read The Thirteenth Tale on my trip to New York and absolutely loved it. I began The Gargoyle during our visit to Raleigh last weekend and could hardly pay attention to my niece and nephews, I was so captivated. Scroll down for my review of it, and be sure to pick up your copy on August 5th. It’s a book not to be missed! I finished The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid right as we touched down in St. Louis on Friday (scroll down for review), and I managed to plod through Eclipse during our visit as well. It is also reviewed below, but a warning to Stephenie Meyer fans: it’s not pretty.
I started The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society yesterday afternoon and finished it was we landed in Richmond a few hours ago. It was simply delightful, and I’ll be reviewing it here tomorrow.
I don’t normally do much book reading to prepare for trips–I usually rely on internet resources and recommendations from friends, though I’m sure I’d purchase a guide book if I were heading to Europe or somewhere I’m not very familiar with. I don’t go out of my way to read local literature during trips, but I select the books I’ll take with me based on their atmosphere and feel, if that makes sense. I haven’t yet used LT to find relevant material, but I’m a newbie there and am still discovering all the treats it has to offer.
Stay tuned tomorrow for my review of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

I own The Thirteenth Tale, but haven’t read it yet. I also have The Gargoyle as an ARC that I need to read, I keep hearing good things about it. And I will be getting The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society from LT ER!! I can’t wait!!
Looks like you have been doing some terrific reading!!
I’m really looking forward to the Gargoyle! Everyone’s given it such a great review.
